Congratulations

Scottish Athletics Awards 2010
At the recent Scottish Athletic Awards Ceremony held in the Marriott Hotel in Glasgow, there was an air of anticipation from Inverclyde Athletic Club and Head of the clubs Coaching and Development Janice Hendrie as both were nominees for top honours.
Janice a nominee and winner in the Coaching category for the past four years was in the competitive section of ‘Participation’ Coach of the Year. An area where each coach is measured in what they have created to attract young persons into athletics and what developmental plan they have to ensure each young person is not only challenged but their interest kept with differing activities associated with athletics, thereafter a smooth transition through the developmental stages of their young life’s.
As host for the evening, Bryan Burnett read out that Janice had prepared, organised and implemented a coaching programme around the ‘Run, Jump, Throw’ foundation programme for young persons. Had established the ‘Startrack’ programme within Inverclyde, the summer break programme attracting over 50 children per day to participate in athletics throughout the Inverclyde area, an initiative that was so successful that Glasgow City Council sport development officer attended to seek guidance on how this could be implemented in the Greater Glasgow area.
It was with great delight to Inverclyde’s representatives that Janice was awarded ‘Participation’ Coach of the Year.
As the Tom Stillie Memorial Award was to be presented the excitement grew as this was to be presented by arguably the greatest athlete of all time Daley Thompson. Tom Stillie was a past president of the Scottish Amateur Athletic Association who recognised that without volunteers the sport could not thrive and this award was traditionally awarded to an individual who had performed above and beyond to ensure athletics was attractive to participate in and had a programme which saw the development of all standard of athletics to progress to their chosen level.
Again Bryan Burnett read out the ‘CV’ of the nominees with for the first time in history a club, Inverclyde AC were nominated for having an attractive and encouraging approach to athletics in Inverclyde, putting in place a Child Welfare policy, which has been adopted by Scottish Athletics as a blue print for others to follow. A development plan which oversees athletes from five years of age entering ‘mini athletics’ up to Master category and beyond. Options for youngsters who have talents in other fields outside running being retained as the coaching network spans all disciplines and finally the recognition from Her Majesty the Queen awarding Inverclyde AC ‘Queens Award for Voluntary Service’
To the joy of Inverclyde representatives Daley Thompson announced Inverclyde AC as the winners of the Tom Stillie Memorial Trophy for services to athletics. The trophy itself is a five foot engraved sword and as Kenny Morrison approached the stage Daley decided to ‘Knight’ him with the sword. The comment from Daley summed up the work that Inverclyde members carryout ‘I’ve read the CV about the effort you guys put in and even half the work you’re doing to develop athletics is outstanding’
Inverclyde were represented by Janice Hendrie, RhonaBushfield, Emma Steele, Claire Kelly, Julie Simpson, Hazel and Jude Boulton, Robert Shaw, Mark Pollard and Kenny Morrison.
Kenny Morrison commented ‘Inverclyde AC has been fortunate to be nominated and awarded for national athletic awards as well as the Queens Award for Voluntary Service over the past few years however like all clubs this does not happen without the commitment of a number of individuals who work tirelessly in the background without seeking recognition and these awards are testimony to their commitment and endeavours. Coupled with the fact that all the girls had an audience face to face with Daley which went down rather well!’

Juniors in medal wins
Inverclyde juniors returned from the Renfrewshire cross-country relay championships at Linwood on Saturday with three team medals and two fastest laps to their credit.
First off in the ideal conditions for cross-country running were the u11's and despite both teams being one short to compete, first-leg runners Ryan Gray and Abbie Campopiano were not in a mood to just enjoy their runs. Ryan opened up a large gap and passed over to second-leg runner Lucas McGilp with a convincing margin. Lucas, competing in his first open competition, held this lead as he finished his lap with Inverclyde still in first place. Ryan at least was consoled by being awarded the medal for the fastest lap. Meanwhile, Abbie came through the final stages of the girls event strongly and handed over to second-leg runner Louise Craig, who ran well. It was disappointing these youngsters were not rewarded with a team finish for their efforts.
The u13 boys faced similar difficulties, with only two runners available. Ross Gray followed in his young brother's footsteps by quickly opening up a big gap in the first lap, passing over to Tom Semple in first place. It is to Tom's credit that despite being overtaken, he forced this runner to run the fastest lap of the race to achieve it. The u13 girls fielded a complete team and finished in a creditable fourth place with Maggie Catlin producing the fastest run, with good support from Jill McGachy and Kim Simpson.
Inverclyde now moved into medal mode with both the u15 boys and girls teams achieving bronze. Robert Todd set the tone for the boys team, finishing in third with Isaac Dunning finishing in a creditable 10th place. Jack Rice maintained the team position on the second lap with Josh Houston producing the fastes lap for the club on the third leg to secure the bronze. The girls saw Kelly Williams hand over to second-leg runner Evie Semple well up in the close pack. Evie produced a strong run to take the girls team well clear in fourth, giving the final leg runner an opportunity to move into third and a medal-winning performance. Chloe soon closed the gap to move into third and gace the team a comfortable bronze-medal.
Greg Williams was the only athlete available for the U17 mens event and produced th fastest run of the day for the age group. The u17 girls trio of Rebecca Munn, Emma Meechan and Lisa MacDonald ran well for another team medal to the tally with the third bronze of the afternoon.
Many thanks to Julie Simpson and Rhona Bushfield for team management, parents and seniors for support, Hardie's Coaches for transport and National Semiconductor for their support of the junior section.

U15/U17 National Championships, Scotstoun
On the track, the star athlete for the club was undoubtedly sprinter Shaun Tonner.
In his first year of competition and in the younger group of the under-17 men’s age group, Shaun came fifth in both the 100m final on Saturday and the 200m on Sunday, gaining two new PBs on the way. The competition was a steep learning curve for Shaun as he had to come through a heat and a semi-final in the 100m on Saturday before reaching the final. To his credit, he ran faster in each round. In the 200m on Sunday, Shaun was well in control as he eased into the final, and was involved in a photo-finish decision for third place in a very close race.
Greg Williams, also a first year in the under-17 age group, took fifth place in the final event of the championship, the 1500m steeplechase, after gaining a new PB in the 800m event earlier in the day. The club’s remaining finalist on Sunday was Andrew Kelham, who as a first year in the under-15 boys age group, took seventh in the 800m event.
The first day of the championships also involved the under-13 superteams, and Inverclyde AC had 11 athletes taking part. with the boys and girls A teams finishing in a creditable 12th place. Many thanks to Emma Steele and Julie Simpson for team managing the superteams on Saturday, and to Rhona Bushfield, Kenny Morrison, Claire Munn, Emma and Julie for team management and support on the Sunday.

Goodbye and Good Luck to the Kelham family
Junior training was a little easier this Thursday with a tinge of sadness as the club said goodbye to the Kelham family. Rory, Andrew, Lewis, Heather and their parents are leaving for the sunnier climes of Austrailia. Training was replaced by a fun session at the Battery Park with 40 juniors taking part along with some coaches and parents. At the end of the games, presentations were made to the boys who had all achieved top places in their respective club championships. Thanks go to Janice for organising the treats and also the lovely cards presented to each of the family.
Everyone at Inverclyde AC wish the entire family luck and best wishes on their new adventures and we will be sure to keep an eye on performances down under.
