Weekend Round Up 21/22 April 2012
Inverclyde AC track and field athletes opened the season with a bang last weekend with a series of victories and personal bests to build a foundation for the coming season. The sprint group travelled to Dumfries to compete in the local track and field competition and first up was Robyn Kelly in the 70m hurdles a very technical event for the 12 year old. Despite doubts at the start Robyn raced over the hurdles becoming more proficient as the race progressed clocking a victory in a new best time.
Shaun Toner in the mixed senior and under 20 age group was first up in the 100m series, after a blistering start Shaun was in front by the 20 metre mark and began going through the gears to record his first track victory of the summer stopping the clock for a new best of 11 seconds.
In the under 17 girls Evie Semple and Megan Rogers were in the same 100m final. Megan was first to emerge from the blocks after some considerable work over the past few weeks, however not to be outdone the strength of Evie began taking effect on the competition as she raced clear over the second half recording Inverclydes second victory also in a best of 13.0 seconds knocking a clear second off her previous best. Megan's performance was impressive as she executed her race plan well to join Evie on the podium also recording a new best. Georgia Morrison was the under 11 girls representative competing over 80m and was not to be outshone by her older team mates as she raced clear from the gun and continued to run clear of the other girls claiming gold in 12 seconds.
As the events progressed to the 200m's Shaun was in the first final and was a very impressive winner running past his fellow athletes before he hit the home straight, pushing himself all the way home secured victory in 23 seconds. Evie was taking part in the girls final and had the unfavoured lane 8, however she focused well round the bend of the first 100m and as she approached the home straight made clear dayl;ight between herself and second recording an excellent new best in 26 seconds.
Georgia returned to the track for the 150m and despite her first run over the distance was a convincing winner joining Shaun and Evie as double gold winners on the day with a time of 23 seconds. Jill Macaghy was the sole field eventer and will use the learning experience to ensure her summer high jump gets to new heights.

Both athletes using the event to get a feel for the scottish weather having been indoor recently set their 800m standard by dipping under the 2 minute mark. In the 400m Chris returned a time just outside his best of 52 seconds and may need to use some of the sprint group training to assist. Olympic Team Pentathlon - 80 Young Athletes have fun in the sun
The Olympic Pentathlon Teams - Cafe Continential, Cafe Flava, DUO menswear, Nardini Seaview and Cafe Riva.
Inverclyde AC welcomed the arrival of the athletic summer season and the summer weather to hold their first pre Olympic challenge. The importance of this athletic opportunity of experiencing athletics at grass roots level was recognised by local businesses DUO menswear, Cafe Flava, Cafe Continental, Nardini Seaview and Cafe Riva who kindly offered financial support in putting the event on.
With head coach Janice Hendrie being recognised for her tireless work in athletic develpment for young people by being one of the locals chosen to carry the Olympic flame, Inverclyde AC as a club joined Janice in supporting the Olympic ethos by offering a come and try session for all local residents to allow them to experience the community feeling among the Inverclyde athletic community. This come and try session formed part of their Run, Jump, Throw programme and was competed over a team pentathlon challenge.
Over 80 young athletes and coaches took the challenges of Standing long jump, Push Throw, Sprints, Obstacle course and finishing with the ever popular Circle tag. The young athletes formed six teams named after the supporting businesses and experienced one discipline after another where the learning and achievements throughout the evening was clear to the supervising coaches with a number of athletes excelling in some of the events. Reaching the last event of the team 'Circle Tag' it was a close run thing with all teams within a few points of each other, after some tactical baton changes the team representing Cafe Flava emerged as victors.
Coach Kenny Morrison ' This was an excellent example of young athletes experiencing the full range of activities that are offered here at IAC with everyone finding an event that they enjoy and work toward achieving their own personal goals wither that be running, jumping or throwing. I would encourage anyone who wishes to get fit or healthy give us a call we have a team of coaches who are qualified on the full range of activities coaching 5 year olds up, we will assist you finding an event that you will enjoy and reach your own athletic goal'

Juniors Weekend Roundup - Greenock Boys dancing in the streets of Raith and Rouken Glen! 17-18th March 2012
Jonny Glen - A Busy Weekend's Racing
A very busy weekend for Inverclyde AC's athletes who were in action on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday the young athletes were representing Inverclyde & District Boys' Brigade in Kirkcaldy and Sunday the venue was Rouken Glen in Glasgow for the Home Counties International and young athletes road race championship.
In the junior BB race in Kirkcaldy Cameron Watson continued his impressive performances this season as he was amoung the front runners in the large field, progressing over the testing course Cameron was looking to gain victory as the finish approached he was just edged into an very impressive silver. Joining Cameron on the podium were Matthew McKinnon and Cameron Purves who have transformed their season round and have got better and better with every race, these performances resulted in them being part of the bronze medal winning team.
In the intermediate race Jonny Glen, Robert Todd and Calum Hunter had the first race of their weekend as has been the norm over the winter season all boys packed well together to ensure the race was lead with the Inverclyde trio to the fore. Jonny brought in his normal tactic of getting to the front and pushing the pace on causing the runners to be spread over a considerable distance with Robert and Calum keeping close order for the top places, approaching the final stages it was clear Jonny would be claiming another victorious performance however close on his tail for the top places were Robert and Calum who secured third and fourth making a gold winning team.
Greg Williams lead the senior race emulating his junior team mates by dominating from the front and extending his lead to secure another podium finish and more glory for coach Ian Cameron who has been responsible for the development and progression of the boys throughout the winter season.
On Sunday a trip to Rouken Glen for the Home Counties International and young athletes road race championships which was used as a trial for the honour to represent Scotland at the London mini marathon next month.
In the under 17 International, Greg Williams recent run of excellent results and efforts saw him selected to represent the Scottish team and compete against the elite of British athletics. After a fine performance on the Saturday Greg stepped up a level into elite and did himself and Inverclyde proud gaining valuable experience which will stand him in good stead for the up and coming summer season.
As the event moved onto the young athletes road race championship under 13 Ryan Gray was back to his dominant best after a weeks rest and took the race by the scruff of the neck, despite early challenges by his competitors the small frame of Ryan emerged from the far end of the course in front and with the very vocal support of his team mates strode to another victory keeping his clean sweep of titles intact.
The under 15 age group saw Jonny Glen and Ross Gray take to the line after their Saturday exersions. As the gun went Jonny hit the front driving the pace on with his young nemisis from Kilbarchan keeping close order. . With half mile to go Jonny's efforts on Saturday were beginning to take impact as he was pushed into silver medal position despite another gutsy run Jonny secured silver, some considerable distance ahead of third. Ross worked through the field ensuring a good performance was recorded.
In the under 17 age group Robert Todd, Jack Rice and Calum Hunter were in the busy field at the start where Jack was unfortunate to receive an elbow in the nose at the start. Undeterred Jack fought well to come back through the field to join Robert and Calum who were still bouyant with their previous days result. Robert used this to his advantage and secured the first 'Clyde' athlete home followed closely with the red nosed Jack with Calum making the team for a top ten finish.
A return to form for Inverclyde's under 15 girls with Emma Mitchell, Chloe Simpson and Kelly Williams representing the black and white stripes and competing well emulating the boys with impressive personal performances. Emma is now returning to form after a lay off and under the watchful eye of Janice Hendrie will be back to her best soon. Chloe gave a display of things to come this summer with a big improvement on her personal targets. With every race Kelly is steadily moving through the fields and getting closer to her team mates.
Inverclyde will bring the curtain down on the winter season with the end of season challenge, a team Pentathlon which will take place at Inverclyde Academy on Tuesday 27th March at 5.00pm, this will be this first of Inverclyde's pre Olympic challenges, all budding athletes are welcome to come along and join in the fun of the run, jump, throw programme which is similar to the easter 'Startrack' programmes.
Inverclyde AC are in the process of putting their plans together to ensure they are fully prepared for the summer months. Inverclyde AC offer conditioning or development plans which will ensure young people have the talents to tackle all sports and the older attendees can look forward to achieving a beach body for the summer :-)
Inverclyde acknowledge the support throughout the winter of sportinverclyde and McDonald & Co.

Scottish under 18 Indoor 800m Champion 2012 - Greg claims new indoor 800m PB 1:57 and Scottish Title
Inverclyde AC's Greg Williams got the rewards for his winter seasons hard work when he claimed the under 18 Scottish indoor 800m title in a new personal best. Greg who has been experiencing both cross country and indoor racing reached the tail end of the season with considerable successes in the bag but was striving to lower his time over the half mile. As he lined up for the heat the arrival of a number of competitors travelling from Ireland ensured the competition was to be very strong, however a tactical race saw Greg cruise through to the final comfortably.
As the final arrived Greg's race plan to take the pace and push on saw him lead into the back straight where all athletes merge onto the inside lane, the tall Inverclyde athlete was increasing the pace to ensure a fast time, as the athletes approached half way the nosie level of the Irish and Inverclyde support drove Greg on, having the self confidence to inject more pace the gap at the front was widening between the chasing pack, unaware of this Greg drove on into the last 200m pushing himself into new territory as he crossed the line victorious recording a new best of 1.57min.
On the same day speed king Shaun Toner competed over 60m and in the blink of an eye had lowered his best to 7secs, Shaun followed this up with his second best of the day this time over 200m as he worked toward the line stopping the clock on 23seconds.
Evie Semple taking part in the under 16 girls 300m recorded a very fast 43 seconds a hundereth outside her best to qualify for the final unfortunately Evie suffered an illness and was unable to participate in the final.
In the 60m Melainie Morgan and Amy McDonald represented the under 16s and ran close to their bests.
The youngest age groups of the day under 14 Robyn Kelly continued her experience with very fast runs over 60m and 200m
In the field events Jill McGachy equalled her best in the high jump of 1.30 and will look forward to going higher when she takes part outdoor.

Fresh from their recent successes at the National cross country championships and local team of the year and senior sports personality in the shape of Andy Douglas at the Inverclyde sports personality awards, Inverclyde AC returned to club business with the race for the Stoddart/ Moon trophy.
The race held at the coves reseviours opposite the hospital was over a testing course. First to go were the under 11 and under 13 age group which saw Scottish age group champion Ryan Gray attempt to continue his unbeaten run, with the under 13 contesting two laps and the under 11s one lap. As they set off Ryan hit the front and was closley followed by Cameron Watson who was determined to ensure Ryan didnt get it all his on way shadowing his every move. Also in the under 11s Cameron Purves was reaping the benefits of his development plan as he coped admirably with the demands of the trail. In the girls race Sara O'Docherty was leading the pack with Georgia Morrison keeping close order. Close behind the group of Clara Pollock, Alyssa McLelland, Cara Hogg and Gillian Carmichael were having their own battle for the front. As the race reached the final stages Cameron Watson was first member to cross the line victorious claiming the under 11 title in a very impressive 6.45mins, a time some of his seniors would have been proud of. Cameron Purves secured silver with a much improved run. In the girls race Sara continued to hold off the challenge of Georgia claiming first and second. The next positions were going to be a challenge for the officials as all four Clara, Alyssa, Cara and Gillian sprinted for the line with one second seperating the four girls with Clara and Alyssa getting the nod for third equal.
In the second race of the day all other athletes under 15, 17, 20 and seniors started as one with the under 15 age group silver medallist Jonny Glen hitting the front with top under 17 Greg Williams. As the seniors filtered into line behind the young guns, Jonny and Greg were not going to succumb to the pressures being brought upon their young shoulders by the seniors. A return to competitive action by John Cook saw him lead the charge for the seniors with Tom Jamieson tailing the leaders with the worrying sight of over 55 champion Gerry Gaffney pulling them in as the distance increased. However over the testing 5K course it was not to be as Greg and Jonny held their form crossing the line together claiming victory, John securing bronze and Tom holding off the strong finishing Gerry. In the under 15 girls Chloe Simpson secured victory from Kelly Williams with Calum Hunter and Robert Todd taking second and third in the under 17 race. Robert Gray managed to keep his emotions intact this week to claim the scalps of Robert Shaw and George Heggarty securing vital points in the championship.

Inverclyde AC travelled with high expectations despite their senior team being weakend by illness and injury. At the end of the day their expectations were realised leaving the venue with three individual and a team honour.
First event of the day was under 13 boys where Inverclyde's Ryan Gray was experiencing the National for his first time. Ryan unbeaten all season had the weight of anticipation on his very young and small shoulders. At the half way mark it was a two horse race with Ryan and his Perth competitor striding clear from the field. Breaks were being tried by both athletes in a bid to break free however each time they both managed to cover each others tactics. It was on the testing last half mile that Ryan made his bid for stardom digging deep into his abilities creating a gap which was decisive reaching the final 100m home straight where he was meet by the noise of a very vocal Inverclyde support rising to acknowledge his first National title at his first attempt. Ryan emulates the achievement of Danny Kerr who won the title over 25 years ago.
In the under 15 boys race Jonny Glen was keen to take on the best under 15s in the UK in the shape of an impressive Kilbarchan duo. Jonny set his stall out early being determined to be at the front of the race from the gun. As the race progressed again the colours of Inverclyde were at the fore as Jonny emerged from the heavy underfoot conditions in the small forest area just behind the leader from Kilbarchan and clear from third place. Again the vocal support and ringing of the bells had Jonny striding for glory with a determination beyond his years. In the final straight Jonny drove for glory to secure a silver medal in what was a performance way beyond that expected leaving one of the UKs top young athletes in his wake.
Next up securing a visit to the podium were the under 20 girls, Emma Rice, Kerri McLeaod, Rachael Bushfield and Nichole Darroch
Such was the euphoria of previous performances the girls clearly decided they wanted to be involved and such was the rise in personal achievements the team lead home by Emma made sure they were in close contact with each other to allow the counters to announce Kerri, Rachael and Nichole as bronze medallist.
In the final event of the day the crown for National senior champion was a dilemma for Inverclydes elite coach Lawrie Spence who supporting the clubs senior athletes had the benefit of coaching current GB internationalist and last years winner Derek Hawkins running for Kilbarchan. With the three lap event covering 12K, the equvilant of 12 laps of the battery park, Inverclyde sports personality nominee Andy Douglas was stride for stride at the front with Hawkins as the race headed out nearing the end of lap one. With previous winner Mark Pollard keeping close order the colours of Inverclyde were emulating their junior counterparts at the front. Reaching lap two the pace set by Hawkins was relentless as he pulled clear of the 500 competitors with only Andy rising to the challenge. Going into the final lap having covered 5 miles previous Hawkins had created a small gap over Andy who by this time was well clear of third place. Andy's pace equating to under 3 minutes for lapping the battery was looking impressive taking him clear of third place but not quite pulling in the GB Internationalist. As Andy reached the final home straight the compact efficient style of Andy secured a silver medal and another milestone in his programme toward the Commonwealth games in Glasgow.
Despite the successes at the podium end of the events Inverclyde had other impressive performances none more so the Greg Williams who had the courage and determination to take the lead and push the pace on in the under 17 boys causing the field to be strung out and was unfortunate not to hang onto a medal position getting edged out in the final half mile. Greg was joined by Michael Houston, Jack Rice, Calum Hunter and Robert Todd to record a fifth place finish. In the under 15 just behind Jonny, Josh Houston and Ross Gray were at the top end of the field and impressed coach Ian Cameron.
In the senior race such is the elite level of performance Mark Pollard sets himself he was disappointed despite setting a high standard for all Inverclyde athletes to follow. In the older age group Gerry Gaffney claimed a number of younger scalps using all his 40 years experience of how to cope with the stresses involved at this level of competition. Sean Gaffney's season came together as planned improving his time and placings quite considerably and will now look forward to the summer content in the knowledge of his increased performance. Robert Gray can be excused for his performance as he ran round the 12K course wallowing in the successes of his sons Ryan and Ross he clearly had run out of nervous energy.
Inverclyde recognise and acknowledge the support from all local athletes and supporters who through vocal support and constant bell ringing pushed their athletes onto elite performances ensuring the colours of Inverclyde remain at the fore of Scottish Athletics.

National Superteams - Scottish National 3K for seniors and National relay championships. 11-12 Feb 2012
Inverclyde AC athletes were to the fore last weekend competing in the National Superteams for boys and girls under 12, Scottish National 3K for seniors and National relay championships. All championships were held within Kelvin Hall indoor arena in Glasgow.
First up were the under 12 Superteams where athletes compete in four events high jump, 60m sprint, 4 x 200m relay and the shot putt. Inverclyde Super girls quartet of Georgia Morrison, Joy Fraser, Emily Colville and Samantha Dunning arrived at the high jump with trepidation being relatively inexperienced however the girls soon managed their run up and cleared the first couple of heights to be competing for the top places gaining a sound start to the competition. 60m sprint was an event the girls were looking forward to and this proved to be the case in the first heat Georgia ran clear of the field recording a new best. Equaling Georgias run Joy and Emily continued Inverclydes victorious 60m runs with all three running under 10secs.
In the girls 4 x200m relay Inverclyde were being recognised as a force to be reckond with, coach Claire Kelly managed to keep the girls calm as Georgia brought the baton home in the lead on the first leg, this gap was extended by Emily and even further increased by Joy who handed over to Samantha to enjoy the final 'glory' leg securing what was an exciting event to watch.
In the final event the shot putt all girls gave all the effort they had left, at the conclusion of the competition the girls points total secured an excellent position just six points of a podium place. With some of the girls in the same age group next year the experiences gained will stand them in good stead.
Not to be out done Cameron Purves represented the boys and gave some cracking performances to ensure the credibility for the boys teams when the training squads next get together
Shortly after the girls performances, Sports Personality nominee Andy Douglas decided to came right down in distance to compete in the National 3K championship. This in preperation for his main event the Scottish Cross Country championship next weekend at Falkirk. From the gun the pace was unrelenting as Andy kept tabs on the leaders until 800m to go when he made a bid to pull in the leaders as they reached the bell for the last lap the pace raised to which appeared a real burn up to the tap with Andy securing silver in a very fast 8.27 knocking some 30 seconds off his previous best.
On Sunday 'Clyde' had an under 14 girls and under 20/ senior men 4 x 200m relay teams. Alison Loose, Emma Smith, Robyn Kelly and Ashley Lewis gave speedy performances and were unlucky not to make the final. The mens quartet of Ewan Wong, Ged Cook, Matthew Thomson and Shaun Toner emulated the girls being just edged out of a final place despite some really fast legs. With the up and coming opening of the revamped Ravenscraig stadium all sprinters will build on their performance and look to progress come the outdoor events.

Renfrewshire AAA County Road Race Championships - Battery Park Greenock - Sunday 5th February 2012
Ruddy retained his RAAA Road Race Title
Local MP Iain McKenzie was on hand to see the top athletes in Inverclyde compete for the title of number one road racer in the Renfrewshire area. Much to his pleasure it was local athletes who dominated the top placings. Inverclyde AC were to the fore with eleven medals collected with Renfrewshire titles to Ryan Gray, Greg Williams, the under 11, under 15 and under 17 boys teams and the title of the best road runner in Renfrewshire going to Craig Ruddy.
IACs Scottish International pairing of Craig Ruddy and Mark Pollard strode confidently to the front of the senior mens race and lead the chasing athletes as they circled the Battery Park prior to heading eastbound along the Esplanade. As both athletes hit the main road it was Craig who pushed the pace opening up a slight gap on Mark as the hot pace set by two of Scotlands top distance athletes continued to take them clear from the chasing pack. With a mile to go Craig made a clear break and as he passed coach Lawrie Spence he received instructions to push himself on to another level, responding to this Craig raised his pace and was an impressive sight to the watching public as he powered to the finish victorious. Not to be outdone Mark moved through the gears to hit full pace along the finishing straight to make it an impressive one two for 'Clyde'.
Glenpark's Stephen Trainer took the broze medal as he led a strongly packed Glenpark team to a well deserved team victory for the first time in 9 years in the County Championships. IAC took the team silver with Sean, Thomas Jude and Gary making up the remaining places. Other performances of note in the seniors came from John Smillie who took 2 mins of his time last year and the Bushfield ladies. Run of the day though came from Gary who only 24hrs before had raced in the Masters X Country and suffered from mild hypothermia and exhaustion at the finish. He certainly bounced back to make the sixth counter on the day for IAC.
Equally impressive in the under 17 boys age group was Greg Williams who despite earlier muscle pulls returned to the fore when his fellow competitors were happy for him to lead, undaunted by this Greg willingly accepted this invitation and extended his stride length to open up a gap with each stride over the 3 mile course. As he approached the battery he was a clear winner and enjoyed the feeling of again leading his club mates home. Greg was joined by his under 17 team mates, Michael Houston and Robert Todd who again stuck to their task by being at the front end of races so much so that Inverclyde were awarded the gold medal for the team, making it a double for road and cross country.
The ever popular Jon Glen received plenty of vocal support as he competed against the UK s top under 15, Jon dug into his reserves and pushed himself to ensure he kept close attention to the leader and worked as only Jon does to win the silver medal with an excellent performance. Like the under 17 boys the under 15 team of Jon, Josh Houston and Ross Gray collected yet another podium finish this time at the top winning the gold.
In the under 13 boys race Ryan Gray took the title to add to his already bulging award cabinet this season and now looks forward to the Scottish championships as the only athlete unbeaten this season. In the youngest age group under 11 Cameron Watson was the clubs top performer claiming the silver with a very good run from the youngster.
Finally a BIG Thanks to all who helped support proceedings. To Peter for the results. And to Emma Steele his left hand lady for assisting him doing the results. Emma did the same job when helping Janice with the hunners of U11's. Thanks to all Inverclyde members who took up the call to arms and made sure there were stewards round the course under the watchful eye of Gerry. Then there were our members on the finish line doing the recording of times and places. Helen, Hugh C, George and Ian C. Thanks. I shouldn't forget Campbell who was roped in to give me hand with the places in the younger age groups. And who then managed to get round the course in the senior race. Of course there is always the guy who can do do a good "turn". This time it was John Bannister at the end of the splash.
Well done Inverclyde AC on a very successful Championship.
PS...Indoor speed merchant Chris Barlas won the Scottish University indoor 1500m just outside his PB 4.07 start to finish solo run. Well done Chris!

Weekend Roundup - 23/1/12 - IAC @ National Indoor Champs - Kelvin Hall & McCain UK Cross Country - Antrim
Chris Barlas - 1500m PB
Inverclyde AC had a very busy weekend with athletes competing both indoor and outdoors. At the National indoor open championships at Kelvin Hall, Glasgow athletes not only faced the challenge of each other but a breakdown of the IT system causing extensive delays for the waiting athletes. The ever popular Chris Barlas again stepped into the arena with the intention of challenging for a new best in the 1500m. Barlas's compact frame suited to the indoor environment took close order of his competitors as the quick pace injected by the overseas athletes strung the field out. Chris battled through the painful middle part of the race and began increasing his pace toward the finish with one lap remaining Chris was pulling in places as he crossed the finish line with a personal best by two seconds.
Also pushing their body to create new bests were Greg Williams and Shaun Toner. Greg going in the 800m faced the challenge of the current National champion and fastest 800m athlete over the past few years in Guy Learmonth. Greg fought hard as the hot pace burned off some of the challenges but , Greg stuck to his own plan and was awarded with a very creditable 1.58min and personal praise from the National endurance coach. Speed king Shaun Toner delivered in the longer sprint, 200m, having gained valuable experience in the recent indoor leagues Shaun put this to good use as he 'gunned it' from start to finish as instructed by coach Kenny Morrison to record victory in 23sec.
'Clydes' girls were also on show with good performances from under 14 Robyn Kelly who despite competing with older girls recorded times just outside her best. Laura Thomson made a welcome return to competition with a solid performance in the 60m. Evie Semple continued her development with another outing over 200m.
In a less weather friendly environment Andy Douglas and Craig Ruddy were at the forefront of a Scottish select competing in the McCains international cross country event in Belfast. Both Andy and Craig who are finalising their preparation for the Scottish National cross country at the end of February ran very aggresively as has become their norm to ensure the Scottish team were victorious on the podium at the end of the day.
Inverclyde also recognises the many young athletes who competed for their schools at the Inverclyde schools cross country races at St Columbus High School, where again despite the attrocious weather conditions they all performed with distinction.

Smillie's Miles Better! - Elliot / Cunningham Races - Saturday 14th January 2012
John Smillie - ElliotCunnigham winner 2012
Inverclyde AC held their second club championship race on Saturday afternoon over the 5 mile Battery Park / Esplanade course competing for the Elliot/ Cunningham trophies, first awarded in 1922.
It was a great year for trophies in Greenock in 1922!
In the young athletes races Cameron Watson was first to cross the finish line dominating the under 11 age group from the gun to run clear and collect maximum points toward his championship bid. New arrival Sara O'Doherty produced a gutsy display to claim victory in the girls race for her first outing in 'Clyde' colours. Cameron Purves for the second week in a row made it a one two for Inverclyde's Cameron's. Cara Hogg and Georgia Morrison completed the podium finishers for the girls. The under 11s also saw good competitive performances from Alyssa McLellan, Gillian Carmichael and Joy Fraser with an exciting competition between the two Samanthas, Williams and Dunning with Samantha Williams edging out her name sake in the sprint in.
In the under 13s Matthew McKinnon raced to the front and despite the best efforts of Craig Bellow strode into the finish first. With Olivia Gemmell taking the under 13 girls title.
It was business as usual with under 15 Jonathon Glen driving from the front to command the race claiming top spot from Callum Hunter and Robert Todd. Emma Mitchell lead the girls in with Chloe Simpson and Kelly Williams filling the top three spots.
The senior race was a conceeding handicap with the more experienced athletes setting off at the back of the pack, a rejuvenated John Smillie was one of the leading runners and his air of confidence was apparent as he hit the front with two miles to go. It was no surprise that John retained the lead and continued to drive to the finish to win the Elliot/Cunningham Cup for the first time since 1994. John's victory is just reward for months of solid training based around Cammie's fartleks and hill sessions which are now paying dividends. Behind John Rhona Bushfield and Gary McKendrick were having a battle of their own with Gary pulling past Rhona in the final 200m of the race to claim a well deserved second place. Rhona can also be pleased with her performance as she rebuilds her training after a lengthy outage due to injury. Guest runner and ex Spango man Tony (Tommy) McKnight had an excellent run to record the second fastest overall and fastest Vets time of the day. Back marker Greg Williams was scything through the field and with one lap of the battery remaining it was clear he was having the fastest run of the day but could he pass the evergreen Gerry Gaffney and Thomas Jamieson? Age played its part as Greg strode past Gerry and in the final straight Thomas' legs couldn't quite match the turn over of Greg's as the youngster raced clear to the line. Morris Glen was a welcome sight on his first competitive outing and maybe not matching son Jon's ability has a platform to build on for his next outing. There were other good runs from Jude Boulton, Damien Mallet, Robert Shaw and handicapper Tom Tracey.
Thanks go to the timekeepers, officials and catering staff. Inverclyde acknowledge the support of McDonald & Co and sport inverclyde.
