Loch Ness Marathon & festival of running - 28th September
Loch Ness was a happy hunting ground as Inverclyde AC's endurance monsters Andy Douglas and John Sharp took to the start line for the 10K and marathon respectively.
Andy set the pace for the mass 10K competitors but didn't have it all his own way with a number of fellow internationalists matching his pace as the race approached the 5K mark Andy moved into another gear which proved decisive as he opened up a small gap, having taken on the worlds best at mountain running Andy pushed on claiming victory in a swift 30.10 minutes for the 10K course.
In the marathon event John was having his own challenge with a steady pace being set as the event also incorporated the Scottish National championship, as is the case with championship events credibility and podium finishes are cherished by all athletes. John kept a sensible race plan as the miles went by, chalking them off it was evident a personal best was on. The Inverclyde athlete approached the finish straight well within his previous best in addition to winning a bronze medal in the national title stopping the clock in 2 hours 30 minutes ranking him among some of the fastest local marathon runners.

George Cummings Relays - 27th September
Inverclyde AC ladies stole the show at the George Cummings relay championship in Houston last weekend. The event which also contests the Renfrewshire county road relays added to the delight of trio Rachael Bushfield, Julie Gordon and Sharon Muir.
Rachael set the team up for a solid start over the 2 1/2 mile hilly terrain around Houston village. Julie set off on the second leg in determined fashion pulling in the leading athletes before hitting the lead in the second part of the course arguably the most demanding area she then opened up the gap before handing over to Sharon who enjoyed the challenge and pressure on the last leg to secure victory, the Cummings title and the title of best ladies team in Renfrewshire.
In the mens race Jonny Glen lead the 'A' team and hit the front from the gun and was leading the event after 50m. Jonny powered round the course recording a new best and a lead for Inverclyde. Mark Pollard was out on the second leg and had the challenge of Scotland's top endurance and commonwealth athlete Callum Hawkins chasing him down. Mark gave his usual gutsy performance but was unable to hold Callum off before handing over to Dan Mulhare who's relaxed controlled style is deceiving as he cruised round the course in a very fast 12.30 minutes before Captain Craig Ruddy exploding into the last lap recording a 4.30 minute first mile. Craig continued in his focused fashion bringing the team home third overall and second Renfrewshire team also recording a very fast new best of 12.30 minutes.
With a number of other teams competing there were some exceptional runs none more so than Michael Houston and Ross Forbes. Michael moving more comfortably into the senior ranks and benefiting from a disciplined training plan reaped rich rewards with the fourth fastest time of the day behind Dan, Craig and Jonny. Ross on his first outing at senior level proved he will be no easy target for his club mates with a fabulous leg and a number of local scalps to be proud of.
Chloe Simpson improved her best over the course by over 2 minutes and will be competing for first team places in weeks to come. John Bannister and Tom Tracey not normally in the headlines created their own successes with runs which saw improved performances since last years demands. Robert Todd, Matthew Thomson and Callum Hunter created their own mark to improve on in the coming weeks and will progress toward the winter races.

UK Schools Games (4th - 7th September)
Drew McIntyre brought the curtain down on a very successful summer track and field campaign for Inverclyde AC.
Drew travelled to Manchester to participate in the UK School games representing Scotland in the 4 x 100m relay.
The Inverclyde academy pupil was selected after being the first local athlete to break the 11 second barrier for 100m in a considerable number of years. Drew lead of the Scottish quartet and after some small adjustments to his start exploded from the blocks and drove into his acceleration phase as he began making inroads into the opposition before handing over the baton in first place, despite Drew's electric start Scotland were unable to hold the lead and were content with a very fast time.
Drew along with his Inverclyde team mates now move into a heavier training period with young athletes invited to 'Clydes' tester sessions before the development groups are fully established, for further detail contact us here.

Scottish national track and field championships for young athletes (23rd-24th August)
Inverclyde AC got the seal of approval for their young athlete development plan after a string of stunning performances at the National track and Field championships. The event held in Aberdeen over two days saw over 1200 athletes compete for the titles of best in their age groups.
Inverclyde's first national title of the weekend went to Nuala McCheyne competing in the girls 800m, Nuala shadowed the leader as the race progressed into the windy conditions using experienced race tactics Nuala attacked with 100m to go and a willingness to improve on her silver medal won indoor she surged to the line to claim gold and the national title.
Connor Malley on his last outing before emigrating scrapped into the javelin final, however a determined Connor used his first throws as a gauge and to lull his competitors into a false sense of security before stepping up on his last throw and launching the javelin an incredible 44m to claim gold and a massive personal best by 10m.
With personal bests the target for all athletes competing, Drew McIntyre qualified with ease for the 100m recording a new best. The final for the 15 year old saw the fastest under 17s in Scotland take to the line before the gun exploded the athletes into action, despite a difficult start Drew powered through the field to claim a place on the podium for bronze but greater reward was stopping the clock at 10secs the first time a local athlete has broken the 11 sec barrier for some considerable time.
In the girls 300m Robyn Kelly produced another fine display in the final, striding confidently into the headwind on the back straight before attacking her competitors and holding her poise in the final 50m to claim a bronze place on the podium.
At the end of the weekend it wouldn't be a national championship without Inverclyde's Jonny Glen getting the 'Clyde' supporters excited with his off the wall tactics over 1500m. In true jonny style he hunted down the leaders as the last lap burn up took off and with every stride he moved past athletes before hitting the home straight in 5th place not quite happy with this jonny dug deep crossing the line to win a cracking silver medal ensuring he has been on the podium at all age group events through both cross country and track.
As with all events individual performances and successes are important not just winning medals, Matthew McKinnon knocked an incredible 10 secs off his best time over 800m rich reward for the commitment in training over the last months. Morgan McColl posted new best times over 100 and 200 and Georgia Morrison equalling her best over 100m.
Valuable Championship experience was also gained for Cameron Watson, Jennifer Lynn, Cliona McCheyne and Samantha Williams.
Thanks from all in local athletics to Texas Instruments who assisted the young athletes travel to Aberdeen.

On Your Marks! The Queen’s Baton Relay heads to River City
The Queen’s Baton Relay will play a starring role in River City next month when Molly O’Hara (Una McLean] becomes Shieldinch’s official batonbearer accompanied by running groups from across Scotland.
In scenes from the popular BBC Scotland drama to be aired on Tuesday 22 July (BBC One Scotland, 8.00pm) Molly limbers up to welcome the well-travelled Queen’s Baton to Shieldinch. She’s joined by five Scottish running groups – the Shettleston Harriers, Kilmarnock Harriers, Inverclyde AC, Ronhill Cambuslang Harriers and Ayr Seaforth Harriers –who filmed the scenes at BBC Scotland’s Dumbarton Studios.
Donald MacKinnon, Series Producer, was delighted to welcome the groups to be part of River City’s Commonwealth Games celebrations: “As Commonwealth fever sweeps the nation, it’s wonderful that Scotland’s most popular soap was part of this unique event. Seeing the Queen’s Baton being held high through Montego Street by Molly was an iconic moment in River City’s history.”
Una McLean, who plays Shieldinch batonbearer Molly O’Hara, adds: “I was thrilled to have the honour of carrying the Queen’s baton through the streets of Shieldinch! And even happier that I didn’t drop it. I must confess I didn’t realise it was so heavy – age allowed me to use both hands to hold it! I so admired all the children from the running groups involved – they were so dedicated and enthusiastic. I just adored all of them!”
The River City storyline is part of the BBC’s year-long contribution to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The BBC is the domestic broadcaster for Glasgow 2014 and in addition to comprehensive sports coverage during the Games in July and August, the Corporation has also unveiled a wide-ranging package of on-air and off-air output and events throughout 2014.

Inverclyde AC travelled to the Ayrshire Athletic Arena to compete in the
West District track and field championships. With the summer season under way this was the first major championship for athletes to test themselves. After a successful winter it was the turn of the track athletes to make a mark and with a final total of 5 golds, 4 silver, 2 bronze and over 20 personal bests achieved it was a very successful competition. In the 100m Drew McIntyre recorded the fastest time of his life as he collected gold in the under 17 boys, after having a stumble at the start Drew moved into overdrive quickly as he stormed through to become the fastest local athlete of the day. Connor Malley missed emulating Drew's gold by a fraction as he recorded a new best to win silver in the under 15 age group. In the sprint hurdles Robyn Kelly continued her rich vein of form after collecting bronze the night before in the 200m she took to the line and cruised through the field in the hurdles to gain another district gold. The under 20 mens 1500m was a local delight as Jonny Glen, Michael Houston and Josh Houston set off and it was soon a 1,2,3 as the laps went by approaching the home straight Jonny had made a determined effort to ensure gold was his, just behind Michael and Josh were having a family battle with Michael keeping Josh at bay to secure a podium finish and Inverclyde's first 1,2,3 at a track championship. Chloe Simpson reaped her improved training programme not only recording a new best but winning silver in the process in the womens under 20 1500m. The biggest favourite of the day Ryan Gray dominated the under 15, 1500m leading start to finish and looking back to his best as he paid another visit to the top of the podium. Ashleigh Lewis was a delighted winner as she gained her first ever district title winning the triple jump her first of many to come. Ashleigh was backed up on the field by Connor who was the victorious silver winner in both his long jump and javelin. Inverclyde's new 800m record holder Greg Williams visited the podium to collect his bronze despite his disappointment his competitors in his next outing will face the payback as Greg looks to put this behind him.
