Dominant in Dumfries
Inverclyde athletes made the journey to Dumfries last weekend to compete in the Nithsdale championship the track and field opening event for the majority travelling.
Inverclyde's current speed king, Shaun Tonner lead the line for his club mates claiming gold for the sprint double 100m and 200m. In the 100m having been working on his start Shaun was up and away and powered through stopping the clock just outside the 10 second mark and a new personal best. Due to a mix up with the starter Shaun was allocated a different 200m heat, undaunted he powered round to another 22 second run. Joining Shaun in the under 20 sprints was Matthew Thomson who finishing just behind clocked new bests in both sprints.
In the girls sprints Evie Semple emulated Shaun as the fastest female of the day collecting two golds for the sprints and a new best over 100m.
These runs set the tone for the other sprinters who as the stepped onto the start line were focused on running fast. Andrew Hunter notched victory in his race and a new best. Ashleigh Lewis lowered her fastest clocking and will focus on lowering that in the weeks to come. Georgia Morrison enjoyed a good day recording new bests in both her 100m and 200m.
Robyn Kelly continued her dominance in her age group with fine victories in the 75m hurdles and despite a challenge in the home straight of the 200m strode home to collect gold with a 27sec run.
In the 800m Callum Hunter and Ross Forbes were the club representatives and in their first outing of the season were awarded with gold for Callum and a bronze for Ross.
On the field events Jill MaGachy high jumped to a podium finish with Alison Loose giving the club their first athlete to compete in the javelin for some considerable time.
The clubs strength of depth on all events were evident with Beth Larkin also recording a time for sprint hurdles and Harris Morrison collecting silver for the under 9's 80m.

Silver Medal and National Call Up For Shaun
(Left - Shaun Tonner)
Shaun Tonner's hard work and effort over the winter months have paid dividends after he received a national call to represent Scottish Universities in an international meeting in Ireland at the end of May.
Currently Inverclyde's fastest athlete Shaun has been concentrating on competing over 200m and has reduced his best times over the past months competing on the indoor circuit.
Last weekend he attended the Scottish University track and field championships, the first of the national titles on offer. Despite typical Scottish weather and a very strong headwind Shaun negotiated the rounds making the final with hopes high to secure a medal.
As the gun went a smooth drive through his gears found Shaun approaching the bend with 100m to go in contention not only for a medal but the title, with a few athletes battling the wind, the free flowing style of Shaun proved vital crossing the finish line so close it required a photo to identify the winner with Shaun winning silver and securing selection for the team to select Scottish Universities in May.

National XC Championshops - Sat 23rd Feb
Inverclyde ACs Ryan Gray was described as unbeatable prior to the start of the under 13 race at the Scottish Cross Country championship held in Falkirk last Saturday.
Ryan currently the best under 13 endurance runner in Britain carried the heavy weight of expectation not only locally but Scotland wide as he arrived for the second year in a row unbeaten in any race. As the gun went Ryan put the nerves behind him and set off at a blistering pace and was soon at the front dictating the tone of the first event of the day. With constant updates being boomed across Callander Park it was clear Ryan was intent on leaving no one in doubt as to how difficult it would be if at all possible to defeat the slight frame of the Inverclyde athlete.
With the course returning back into the main public arena toward the finish Ryan emerged with a considerable lead as he strode with what looked an effortless style approaching the final straight for the second year in a row in front, crossing the line in gold medal position to claim another Scottish National title and keep his unbeaten record intact.
With the tone now set for his older clubmates to follow, Jonny Glen known for taking on any challenge put his toe on the line of the under 17s which is arguably the most competitive age group in Scottish athletics with 10 runners all capable of beating each other. This turned out to be the case as the race set of and the leading group was some 12 strong, however this was no tactical competition this was a test of endurance ability and mental strength as the fierce pace continued with Jonny being among the main pace setters.
As the athletes approached the end of their first lap Jonny was leading a group which had reduced in number to 6, each one having collected a Scottish district or national title and all having Scottish caps to their name such was the competitive level in this race. In the forest area of the course a lapse in concentration found Jonny boxed in at the rear of the group as a break was made by the leaders. Never one to panic Jonny moved through a few gears and was soon back in contention approaching the last 1/2 mile with four athletes contesting the top places.
As the finish straight beckond three athletes were still locked together as the bids for glory were well under way, Jonny received the very vocal support of the local supporters even the club Zebra mascot was in full voice as Jonny approached the finish line to claim a very impressive silver to match last years great achievement.
With Ryan and Jonny being at the elite end of Scottish athletics it should never be forgotten of the very impressive indivdual performances which take place just behind them.
Cameron Watson after a lean few weeks managed to find his mojo when it mattered most being an excellent deputy to Ryan in the under 13 race pushing for the top places throughout the race and gaining a richly rewarded 6th position. The under 13 team being completed by Reece Warnock and Sammy Heral who under the watchful eye of Janice Hendrie will progress as has her previous athletes.
In the under 13 girls the personal dual between Gillian Carmichael and Sara ODocherty continued with Gillian gaining advantage on the day to add that to the victory she secured at the Scottish district championships.
Ross Forbes and Ross Gray were swapping places throughout the season in the under15 category and it was the Forbes variety that secured the bragging rights up to the next race. Matthew McKinnon is clearly benefitting from the tutorage of Janice Hendrie as he had his best run at this level.
In the senior womens race Emma Rice is returning to previous form with an aggresive run finishing in the top quarter of the race, equally worthy of note is the improvement in performance of Rachael Bushfield clearly intent on pushing for the top female spot.
As the 500 athletes took to the start of the senior mens title the frame of the previous double winner Mark Pollard strode to the front of his team mates to lead the line and pass that air of confidence for the coming 12K challenge. And so it turned out as Mark had one of his best outings over the course since destroying the field a few years back. Sean Gaffney was second home for the club with Thomas Jamieson making the clubs podium finish.
In the same race Robert Gray again gave his all to make his clubmates work hard to claim his scalp however Robert can be excused as he made his third lap an honour lap enjoying the praise for coaching sons Ryan and Ross to previously mentioned honours.
This rounded off an excellent weekend for Inverclyde AC having being named Inverclyde's team of the year for the second year in a row on Friday night at the local sports personality award.

County Road Championships - Sun 3rd Feb
On a very windy Sunday the Renfrewshire road race championships took place in the Battery Park and Esplanade.
Inverclyde AC juniors took off from where they left the Renfrewshire cross country races a few months back. In the under 11 girls the arrival of twins Cliona and Nuala McCheyne to the ranks were a welcome addition as the race approached the half way stage Nuala and Cliona were part of the leading group turning the boundaries of the battery from the very strong head wind both girls started passing their competitors with 100m to go Nuala hit the front and began striding for glory in her first outing for the club as the chasing pack moved into sprint mode Nuala was through the finish recoring a fine victory for the club. Sister Cliona also had an excellent debut finishing fourth.
With both girls in the top placings it was up to the others to make their placing count with Nyah Gillan completing the young team counters winning silver in the process. Other under 11, Morgan McCole made her debut and should take pride with her performance.
In the boys under 11s Jake Rae was the top placed athlete with team mates Andrew Winter and Ross Davidson completing the team finishing within seconds of each other.
In the under 13 boys race it was no surprise that UK's top 12 year old Ryan Gray hit the front and dominated another race to add to his portfolio, it should never be under estimated the work Ryan puts in to stay unbeaten and the pressure of expectation weighing on such young shoulders, however the coaching support surrounding all Inverclyde athletes should see him through. Accompaning Ryan was Reece Warnock and Sammy Hearl who both ran well to record a silver medal for the boys team.
Sara ODocherty was the first Inverclyde athlete through in the girls under 13 race ably supported by Gillian Carmichael and Cara Hogg.
As the senior athletes took to the line the wind had died down slightly as athletes left the battery heading for the Greenock end of the Esplanade.
Sean Gaffney was leading the Inverclyde charge ably supported by Michael Houston, Adam McLean and Thomas Jamieson. At the turn on the esplanade Sean was pushing hard opening up a gap on his clubmates with new boy Adam making a claim for a top spot as he passed Michael and Thomas. With the Battery appraoching Sean top spot was never in doubt with Adam his deputy with Thomas pushing Michael to fourth.
Within the same race Inverclyde ladies duo of Emma Rice and Julie Gordon were having a tussle to claim the Renfrewshire title throughout the race. Emma made a break as they entered the Battery and strode clear to finish top female and Renfrewshire champion with Julie a fine silver winner. The ladies team of Emma, Julie and Rachael Bushfield claimed the County Championship for the first time in the clubs history.
Other notable challenges were between John Smillie and Damain Mallet with Captain John not only claiming the scalp of Damian but the silver medal for over 50 age group having just arrived in the second stages of youth in the 50 category.

Celtic Cross Country International in Cardiff
16 year old Jonny Glen of Inverclyde AC justified his first Scottish call up with an outstanding performance in Cardiff where he lead the Scotland team to the gold medal.
Jonny who has been performing very consistently throughout the past year caught the eye of the selectors and was rewarded with a Scottish vest representing the country in the Celtic Cross Country International in Cardiff. Jonny had the added challenge of competing in the older age group.
As the gun went the determined youngster set his stall out early and was chasing down the leaders, such was the pace the lead changed on a number of occasions with Jonny keeping close order. At half way there was a break away of a group including Jonny dictating to the rest of the field.
With the finish line in sight the Inverclyde athlete made a bid for glory and found his new found speed to be fighting it out for a medal position, with
the finish closing in fast Jonny drove hard and was successful in his first representative international to win silver and the accolade of first Scot across the line. The added joy was confirmed when the Scottish team were announced as victorious.

Indoor - National Open
While Jonny was fighting the elements Inverclyde's track specialists were at the indoor Commonwealth Emirates arena participating in the National Open. Speed king Shaun Tonner lead the line with another blistering run over 200m. With little time to think as the gun went Shaun exploded into life as he drove round the top bend passing athletes on his outside as he went into cruise mode on the back straight, with the home straight approaching Shaun moved into top gear as he roared through the line in a new lifetime best of 22seconds and victory in his race.
Shaun was not alone in blistering form as the UKs fastest 12 year old, Connor Malley took to the line in a bid to lower his current top ranking time over 60m. Connor got into his running very quickly as is required and continued with his trained style ensuring another startling time of 8seconds confirming his top ranked status. Connor followed this up by lowering his 200m to 26secs ensuring not only is he top of the rankings over the shorter sprint but a force to be reckoned with over the longer.
Gillian Carmichael ensured the Inverclyde colours were to the fore in the 800m as she notched a victory after a close run with club ate Sara ODocherty. Notable performances were recorded by Robert Wilson who over 200m noted a best. Emulating the other club victors Andrew Hunter over the 60m and the 200m has displayed his training performances in the competitive arena. After lowering his times.

Stoddart/Moon Race Details - Sat 12th Jan
At the start of a busy weekend for Inverclyde AC athletes, an early Saturday start time saw the young athletes tackle the challenging course of the Cove reservoir opposite the hospital.
With all age groups starting together it was Matthew McKinnon, under 15 who made the early pace as he opened up a sizeable gap over his clubmates. It was no surprise that he was being pursued by under 13 Cameron Watson and Sammy Hearl who lead the charge with Cameron Purves, Robert Wilson, Sara ODocherty and under 11 Georgia Morrison forming the chasing pack.
As the runners made their way through the uphill stage of the course Cameron Watson and Sammy Hearl had opened a slight gap with under 11 Georgia Morrison leading the group with Cameron, Robert and Sara in close contact.
Approaching the completion of lap one Matthew strode confidently into his second with Sammy now occuping silver spot as Cameron Watson was forced to drop out due to illness.
Georgia Morrison had now moved ahead of the chasing group and sprinted toward the finish line a comprehensive winner in the under 11s. Following Georgia home Jake Rae had another fabulous run to claim silver with Hannah McGeehan and Ciaran Hogg sprinting home for a dead heat for bronze.
Under 11 John Morrison had a lightening finish to remain ahead of Andrew Winter recording valuable points in the championship.
Once the under 9 and 11s had cleared the finish Matthew McKinnon came striding in claiming top spot and maximum points in the under 15. The race behind with Sammy Hearl and Robert Wilson was hotting up with Sammy getting a sight of the finish first which spurred him on as Robert claimed the place just behind.
First under 13 girl home was Sara ODocherty who held of the challenge of Gillian Carmichael.
In the later start the seniors were joined by the under 17s and the very demanding challenge of Internationalist Jonny Glen and so it proved to be as Jonny scorched from the start line to open a considerable lead as he strode toward a very quick time over the three lap course.
As the athletes passed the lap counter Sean Gaffney lead the joyous return of Craig Ruddy who was under strict instructions to test his return without moving into top gear. Thomas Jamieson lead new boy Adam McLean through his paces as they enjoyed being in the company of one of Inverclyde's elite .
Further back in the pack the wise head of Gerry Gaffney was paying the course respect which would pay profitable dividends at the finish. Young guns Michael Houston and Robert Todd were to the fore competing well against their senior challengers with Rachael Bushfield leading the charge of the female members.
Going into the last lap Jonny was punishing the early challengers with only Craig keeping close order despite the clear instruction from coach Lawrie on the side lines. The experience of Gerry was now showing as he moved passed his younger opponents.
Approaching the finish line Jonny recorded not only full points in the under 17 race but the Stoddart/ Moon trophy for first passed the post. Craig Ruddy claimed the unusual spot of silver but no adverse effect with Sean Gaffney third.
Thomas Jamieson held off the fast finishing Gerry with younsters Michael and Robert and new boy Adam all recording fine performances. John Smillie held his captains reputation alive despite the challenge from top female Rachael.

Inter District, Edinburgh - Sat 5th Jan
After a successful cross country season so far a number of Inverclyde athletes were selected to represent the West of Scotland in Edinburgh to compete in the Inter District competition which was incorporated into the BUPA International Cross Country series.
With a very early start for the under 13 athletes it was a familiar face as Ryan Gray hit the front after the gun. Ryan who will be targeting the National at the end of February was out to prove a point and send a message to his challengers and after some 400m it was clear the early start had no effect on Ryan as he extended his lead to retain his title by some 30 seconds. In the same race Cameron Watson joined Ryan as part of the West of Scotland team, after recent success at Beith road race and a new 800m personal best Cameron worked tirelessly to ensure he was part of the winning team, showing two Inverclyde athletes on t of the podium. Jonny Glen had the challenge in his race by being joined by the internationalist from USA, Europe and GB. Undaunted Jonny joined the leading pack and was mixing it with the internationalist. With a fierce pace being set Jonny was deep into his physical and mental reserves as he approached 400m to go it was only internationalist ahead of the local athlete. With the final sprint to the finish Jonny not only medallled as an individual but emulated Ryan and Cameron in a team gold for West of Scotland. Chloe Simpsons training programme has been paying dividends with a call to the West team and despite flying in from Florida made the trip to Edinburgh and put in a display justifying her selection. Inverclyde AC are now back to full training with all groups now returned to usual days and times with the added luxury of the track being made available for training. |
