Inverclyde AC opened the 2012 Cross-Country and Road relay season with a trip up to Houston for the well-established George Cummings Relay hosted by Kilbarchan Harriers. The club, which had some of its older established runners not competing due to either having a few weeks rest or through injury, was still well represented by quite a few younger members and the old war horses who turn out week after the week.
The “A” team was made up of Under 17 athlete, Jonny Glen, Greg Williams, Sean Gaffney and the “old” man of the foursome, Thomas Jamieson. Thomas had the honour of leading the team off on the first lap of this 4 lap relay, 3 laps for the ladies. Throughout the 2.7 mile lap he was always close to the front of the field with clubmate John Cooke of the “B” team just a few strides ahead of him. John proved the stronger over the undulating course and pulled away to record a time that would be the 2nd fastest time on the day for the Inverclyde members at 14mins 6secs. Jamieson was only 13secs behind in a PB for this course. This would set up the 2nd lap runner Jonny Glen nicely for chasing down his training partner, Michael Houston. The young athlete who has improved so much over the last year wasted little time in catching Michael and would storm round the course in a time of 13mins 19secs to take the club up to 2nd place. His run was the fastest for the club and he would also be in the top 3 fastest times on the day. Not bad for someone who is still in the Under 17 category. Houston for the “B” team although disappointed that Jonny had got past him early on in the lap dug in to his task of keeping his team in the top 10. He managed this and took nearly a minute off his time from last year. He recorded a time of 14min 20secs.
3rd lap runner Greg Williams was now in a position where he would be a target for the runners behind him after the changeover. He was caught by 3 runners after a mile. He managed to hang on to these athletes till the closing stages but found the more the experienced runners he was up against were that bit stronger than he was but still left the club in a position to finish in the top 3. His time of 14mins 14secs was his fastest in this race.
The Inverclyde runner asked to put the club in the top 3 was Sean Gaffney. He started off very fast. He would pay for this as the race unfolded. Over the last mile the course gets very hilly and he started to struggle a little and the first 3 clubs managed to pull away from him. Still he managed to put in his usual big finish when sprinting up the last few hundred yards of the race. He came in 4th with a time that would be a PB, 14mins 10secs.
The first 3 clubs to finish were Shettleston, Cambuslang and county rivals Kilbarchan. As the race incorporates the Renfrewshire Road Relay Championship the “A” team won the Silver medals behind Kilbarchan.
The “B” team were still hoping to make a top 10 finish. Andrew Campbell was the 3rd lap runner for them. He started off at his usual relaxed pace. Half way round and he would start to wake up and realise he was in a race. Still his time of 15mins 12secs wasn’t too bad considering his lack of training. The 4th lap saw Stephen Cooke have his chance of keeping the team in the top 10. It was good to see both the Cooke brothers competing again after a few years out of the sport. Stephen though not as fit as his brother yet, managed to get round the course in 15mins 31secs. A top 10 place just eluded him.
The “C” team was filled with 3 Under 17 athletes, Josh Houston, Robert Todd and Callum Hunter. This was their first race in a senior event and the experience they will have gained will be, I’m sure put to good use over the coming winter. Robert had the best run with a time off 15mins 17secs. The 4th runner was Graeme Hyett. He is now making another comeback and it will only be a matter of weeks and he will be chasing for a place in the first team.
The Vets team or should I say Masters team had the experienced Gerry Gaffney out first. He was the fastest in 15.25. He handed over to new club captain John Smillie. John who has been setting PB’s over all distances over the summer continued in that vein with a time of 16mins 7secs. Gary McKendrick with a time of 16.18 was slightly down on last year. Out 4th was Gavin Morrison. He surprised himself and the other club members, due to his lack of training, when he finished with a time of 16min 24secs. The team were just outside a medal position.
The final two teams, one of which had the Frenchman Damien Mallet, club secretary Robert Shaw and the “old yin”, his words, Tom Tracey running in an uncompleted team. Pick of the 3 was Damien in 16mins 44secs. This left our two lady runners, Emma Rice and Under 17 Chloe Simpson. Emma with quite a few years of now competing in the senior ranks coasted round in 16mins 47. Not bad for her first race in a long time. Young Chloe is another one who will gain from the experience of competing against senior athletes. She did struggle a bit on the hilly parts of the course but still managed to finish in 18mins 36secs.
The pleasing aspect of this first race of the winter season was seeing so many of our young athletes competing. The experience they will gain from these types of races will help them when they make transition to the older age groups.
Thanks to George Newman for doing a very efficient job in recording the times. And also to the many members and friends who gave fantastic support to the Inverclyde runners throughout the race.

Club Trial - 22nd September
Inverclyde AC opened the winter season last weekend in a joint local race along the Esplanade into the Battery and back the same route with a number of impressive performances recorded from the younger members.
In the joint race with Greenock Glenpark Harriers under 17 athlete Jonny Glen was first to show hitting the front with a new found confidence challenging his more experienced competitor Stephen Trainer from Glenpark. As the race progressed along the Esplanade Sean Gaffney, Greg Williams were pursuing the leading pair with Thomas Jamieson, Andy Campbell, Michael Houston and Stephen Cooke keeping close order on the leaders.
As the race hit the battery park Jonny continued his dogged determination opening the gap on the following Sean Gaffney who was finding his hidden talents to lead Greg on the return route.
As the runners hit the Esplande Jonny was clear from his team mates with Sean recording the run of the day to secure second with Greg third. As the finish line approached a few seconds seperated Thomas, Michael whose second half endeavours brought him close to the leaders and the fast finishing Andy and Stephen.
Josh Houston and Robert Todd continued the young guns domination pushing Graeme Forbes hard by his younger team. A welcome return to competitive action by Graeme Hyett setting a marker in a bid to return to his national winning best. At this point the evergreen Gerry Gaffney again confirmed hard work will reap rewards with an impressive result over what for him was a relatively short course claiming the first over 50 award.
Inverclyde's new club captain John Smillie lead by example creating a new best over the course finishing just off under 17 track champion Callum Hunter.
A battle royale between the two Robert's Gray and Shaw saw Robert Gray edge this by one second. However with Robert Shaw returning to dry land this competition will continue in the coming weeks.
It was a good day for coaching duo Ian Cameron and Mark Pollard with their charges claiming more than half of the top placings.
Earlier in the day the young athletes held their start to the winter in the battery park and the challenges made more difficult with the change in age groupings as some moved into the older categories.
With 40 athletes competing from under 9 age group through to under 15. The youngest athletes were set off first with under 9 and under 11 starting
together, after the mad dash from the start line the race settled down with under 11 Georgia Morrison hitting the front being shadowed by Nyah Gillan and Clara Pollock. With the boys Ciaran Hogg and John Morrison having their own personal battle.
Approaching the finish line for the under 9s it was a tight affair entering the final straight with Lewis McEwan, Caleb Dunning, Campbell MacPherson and Paul Leslie vying for the top places. As all athletes crossed the finish line to be the first Inverclyde athletes to finish the first winter race of the season 10 seconds covered the first four Lewis, Caleb, Campbell and Paul. In the girls race Libby Hunter claimed victory.
As the under 11s reached the final straight Nyah pushed hard toward the finish line but was edged out by the fast finishing Georgia with Clara making the podium. Impressive runs were also noted from Katie Purves and Daisy Wilson who on her first outing should be very pleased. The boys podium placings were taken by Ciaran, John and Ross Davidson.
When the older age groups, under 13 + 15 set off for the 3 lap race a fierce pace which would have tested some of the senior athletes was set with Ryan and Ross Gray and Ross Forbes pushing on from the front, this causing the race to spread out along the long pathways of the park. Going through the first lap the leading three were being chased down by Cameron Watson and Matthew McKinnon with Sara O'Docherty creating a challange to the boys. Training team mates Alyssa McLellan, Gillian Carmichael and Cara Hogg were having their own push for times.
With half mile to go Ryan had opened up a gap which he held over the two Ross's to record victory with Cameron closing them down toward the finish. Sammy Hearl now benefiting from his concerted effort in training saw him collect a bronze.
Sara O'Docherty adapted best to the increase in distance with a very impressive 12 min run for the three laps to take the girls title with Alyssa and Gillan making up the other placings

Gerard Cooke wins the Annual Handicap Mile
The annual handicap mile race, where the younger athletes get the chance to take on their senior clubmates by setting off infront of them at various timings took place on Saturday.
At the start of the race the young group of Caleb Dunning, Katie Purves, Niamh Ramage, Alana McCallum, Sian MacAuley, Amy Leigh Beaton, Reece Gamble, Abi Callagher, Colette Connelly and Harris Morrison set off and enjoyed the experience of leading off some of the best young talent in Scotland who were soon to chase them down.
As the club went through setting the runners off wave after wave until the back markers, Scottish Champions Greg Williams and Jonny Glen exploded into the field trying to make up the distance on the leading athletes.
As the race unfolded at halfway Georgia Morrison had hit the front and was striding along going into the second half. The surprising sight of seeing the areas fastest sprinters running a mile was a sight to behold however it did not put Gerard Cook and Shaun Tonner off as both dug deep in a bid to manoevoure through the youngsters in front of them. Evie semple was working hard with Emma Mitchell chasing the place for the top female spot as both were stride for stride approaching 300m to go. In the under 13 age group Sara O'Docherty was impacting on the race as she began to move toward the front of her colleagues passing some mature athletes on the way.
As the athletes turned into the final 200m straight Gerard Cook was looking every inch the winner as he began striding confidently toward the finish and had to rely on his speed as he was hunted down by the very strong finish of Gavin Morrison who's power in the second half was paying dividends. A extra deep effort saw Gerard claim the win.
Gerry Gaffney was coming down in distance and was proving a stubborn obstacle for the under 17s Callum Hunter, Robert Todd and Ross Forbes to get past, but with youth on their side they approached the finish edging Gerry out. With the other athletes having their own personal battles non more so than the fast finishing duo of Jonny Glen and Greg Williams who had come from the rear of the field crossing the line in the fastest times of the day. Evie Semple showed her pace in the closing stages which gained her international recognition to be the first female to cross the line with young Sara ODocherty taking second.
A number of young athletes have now reaped the benefits of their committment and development with Cara Hogg, Hannah McGeehan and Sammy Hearl knock lumps of previous times over the distance. Cameron Watson gave evidence of things to come this winter with an impressive top 10 finish among his more experienced peers.
Inverclyde AC look forward to the start of the winter season with the next junior club race being back at the Battery park at 1200hrs on Saturday 22nd September followed by the annual prizegiving the same night at 7pm.

Scottish National age group Championships at Grangemouth
Greg Williams of Inverclyde AC became the best under 20 800m athlete in Scotland last weekend after competing in the Scottish National age group Championships at Grangemouth.
Greg went into the championships looking to improve his personal best but in true Scottish style the weather put paid to that plan and a very competitive tactical race ensued as the gun went. With the lead changing between the front three athletes Greg was always in contact approaching the bell for the final lap. Greg opened up his huge stride and began eating up the ground taking him into the lead, heading into the home straight Greg pushed on through his gears taking him to a comfortable victory securing the Scottish title with 'Mo-Bot' impression.
After Greg, his team mates accepted his challenge with Evie Semple powering down the back straight of under 16 300m heat hitting the front at 150m to go was a clear qualifier for the final. As the gun went for the final Evie found an explosive start and began making head way with the athletes outside her going into the bend in medal contention. Entering the home straight Evie was in a medal winning position and was hunting down the leader as the finish line approached Evie was just pipped into winning silver with a very impressive mature performance.
In the under 18, 1500m Jonny Glen was a familiar figure at the front of the field, despite a very heavy training week at London Jonny dug deep into his reserves to push the pace on and shadow the opposition as the field strung out. Approaching the final lap the pace was beginning to tell on all athletes as only the strong survived with Jonny hitting the home straight driving to the line to secure bronze.
Equalling Jonny's bronze was under 20 Shaun Toner who exploded from his blocks in the 100m after going through the drive phased opened up his stride and powered through the 60-90m mark securing a top place finish and the reputation of one of the fastest athletes in Scotland.
Inverclyde also had a number of athletes experiencing this very intimidating arena for the first time in the under 14 sprints Finlay Burnside and Conor Malley ensured the black and white stripes were to the fore proving the sprinting legacy being set in Inverclyde is in good hands
Innes Lowrie and Amy McDonald were the field representatives and have set a solid standard to build on when they gain more experience.
Young Cameron Watson showed why athletics is his first sport knocking 6 seconds off his best in the 800m and with a full winter programme behind him will knock that time considerably next summer.
Other results: A top 8 placing for Laura Thomson in the 100m Under 18. Another 29sec run from Robyn Kelly 200m. Conor Malley had a go at 100,200 and long jump making the final in all in his first championship. Ross Forbes under 16 1500m was just outside his PB.
And thanks to Janice and Emma who gave up their weekend to ensure athletes made the champs.
Inverclyde's full athletic programme is now up and running with all coaching training in running, jumping and throwing in Inverclyde Academy on Tuesday's at 5pm or the Battery on Thursday 5pm.

Jonny Glen goes sub 9 with a PB in the u18 UK National 3,000m in Bedford.
Inverclyde AC's Jonny Glen lead the charge against the best of the UK's under 18 in the UK National 3,000m in Bedford.
In the scorching temperatures hitting England at the weekend, Jonny and coach Mark Pollard made the trip south to test his athletic prowess against the best the country can offer.
As the gun went a tactical start by all athletes made for a slow start as cat and mouse amoung the field continued through the first 1,000m. However the bravery of Jonny saw him shadow the leaders as the pace increased causing a few athletes to drop off the back of the field.
With 1,000m to go a break was made with the front runners who opened up a small gap as jonny had his own personal battle, approaching the last 500m Jonny made a brave strike for home as he moved clear of the following group making head roads into the top four athletes, hitting the home straight the aggressive style of Jonny saw him clear of the pack as he strode toward the finish line in a new personal best of 8.55mins.
Jonny now moves from Bedford to London having been awarded a place in a development training camp. Jonny was awarded this privilage having secured a top 6th place in the London mini-marathon.
This camp is the reward for the hard work and effort put in by Jonny and his coaches of Ian Cameron and Mark Pollard. The selection for such course was fierce as a top place finish in the Inter-county cross country championships held in March in Rouken Glen, Glasgow was required to secure a place in the London Mini-marathon an event won many years ago by a young Mo Farah. Undaunted by the environment of London Jonny performed to such a level he finished 6th and was invited to attend a 2 week camp in London.
Jonny will be joined by Mark for the next two weeks where athletes and coaches will be given training and workshops on what it takes to make it to International level. With the Commonwealth Games coming to Glasgow in 2014, the World Athletic Championships in London 2017 and the potential Youth Games coming to the UK in 2018 the chances for UK athletes to attend major events couldnt be better.
Inverclyde AC await the return of Jonny and Mark to bring those experiences gained and add into the programmes delivered to all club members.

FRANK SINCLAIR MEMORIAL - OPEN 10K ROAD RACE - SAT 9th JUNE 2012
THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD...STEPHEN TRAINER VICTORIOUS ON GOUROCK PROMENADE!
Stephen Trainer of Greenock Glenpark Harriers was an emphatic runaway winner of Inverclyde AC’s Frank Sinclair Memorial 10K Open Road Race over the new out and back course along Gourock waterfront on Saturday. Stephen led the race from the starters gun and never looked back eventually finishing a full two and a half minutes ahead of his nearest challenger Bruce Carse of Bellahouston Road Runners to set the course record for this new route that all who ran seemed to enjoy on Saturday. Hopefully if Stephen can stay fit and healthy he should be able to go even faster before the summer is out. Sean Gaffney also took an excellent third place for Inverclyde AC with a typically strong determined run to win the Frank Sinclair Salver as the first Inverclyde AC athlete home. After a short layoff Glenpark marathon man Alan Henderson made an encouraging return finishing just ahead of teammate Steven Campbell in fourth and sixth place respectively. John Cooke also had another solid run for Inverclyde AC to finish 7th overall just ahead of teammate and first male veteran Gerry Gaffney who had a stormer of a run on the day to also finish 9th overall. Greenock Glenpark Harriers Terry Wall also had an excellent run in the ladies race to finish second, with Terry finishing just 100m down on the leading lady Jane Wild of Bellahouston Road Runners. The third lady finisher and first lady veteran was unattached athlete Allison Arnold. Other good runs for Inverclyde AC came from the fast improving John Smillie wh recorded a new 10k PB and Gary McKendrick, Gavin Morrison and George Hegarty and for Greenock Glenpark Harriers they came from the ever consistent Graham McGrattan. Also Chris Watson, Brian McCluskey, Ross Neilson and Michael Dunn. Many thanks to everybody that helped to time keep. Also all the stewards, registration, results, photographer Peter and James for setting an excellent new course. Thanks also to David McCorkindale and all the management and staff for all their help with the registration and changing at the excellent new refurbished Gourock Outdoor Swimming Pool that opened its doors for the first time on Saturday morning. It is truly another excellent sporting facility in the Inverclyde area and the local Council are to be commended for their work with this and other sporting venues in the area. Hopefully this will encourage even more people in the area to get active in Olympic Year. Finally thanks to Café Flava Gourock for their assistance with the excellent coffee on the day. The Club hope that this event will be even bigger and better next year at this excellent venue in Gourock.

Scottish Track and Field Championships Scootstoun Glasgow 2/6/12
Inverclyde AC had representatives at the National track & field championships at Scotstoun last weekend. This is the top track and field competition in the summer fixture list and a vital preparation for the Olympic trials in two weeks.
After a successful start to his season Shaun Toner entered his first senior championship with the intention of gaining vital experience for the coming years and competiting against the fastest athletes in the country over 100m and 200m. On day one his 100m, Shaun was electric from his blocks thereafter began powering through the second half of the race to secure a second place good enough to claim a guarenteed lane in the final. A few hours later Shaun lined up against the country's flying machines and did not look out of place as all 8 athletes not only battled against each other but the difficult head wind, which seems to be an unwelcome feature at Scotstoun. Undaunted by his competitors Shaun was out of his blocks sharp and held onto his competitors to be just a whisker outside his best time despite the wind. On day two Shaun had the longer 200m sprint with a target of making in the final and similarly to the 100m Shaun did this with a very aggressive run in his heat. Come the final despite an uncustomary delayed start Shaun powered round the top bend going through his gears into top speed began pulling in his competitors as he approached the finish line. An excellent display by Shaun in his first outing in the senior championships and is now recognised as being one of the top 10 fastest athletes in Scotland.
In the 5,000m Inverclyde hopes were high with Craig Ruddy, Mark Pollard and Sean Gaffney representing the area in the unforgiving environment of the track. As the gun went Craig and Mark were among the leaders pushing the pace on with a professional understanding due to the windy conditions that they each required to share the work at the front. Sean Gaffney was having his on battle going through the first mile well under the 5 minute barrier as he drove aggressively targetting a new best in the competition. Back at the front the pace began to hot up with 2 laps to go with Craig shadowing the leaders as Mark dug deep to stay in contention. Approaching the last lap a lapse in concentration saw Craig fall off the pace as the leaders burst for victory. With an explosive last 150m to go Craig was flat out sprinting and just missed claiming the title by the narrowest of margins. Mark displayed his aggressive finish to be just outside the podium finishes, with Sean securing third home for the Inverclyde club.
Inverclyde now move toward a busy week with the young athletes competing at the Scottish Schools championships where hopes are high for some impressive performances.
And history in the making for Tom Tracey and Janice Hendrie as they carry the Olympic flame in the Olympic torch relay on Friday.
All budding athletes/joggers are invited to the 10K Frank Sinclair run starting at the outdoor pool in Gourock Saturday 9th June
Edinburgh Marathon - Sun 27th May 2012 - Hazel makes a Hot marathon debut and Pacy Tracey clocks another one
Edinburgh Marathon
Congratulations to our two marathoners in Edinburgh on Sunday. What a run from Hazel. Just missed her target time but who wouldn’t in the very hot conditions on Sunday. All the hard work she has put into it, under the watchful eye of Jude, made sure she got round the course, even having a sprint finish, to enjoy the whole experience.
You may know Hazel was running for the Parkinson’s Disease Charity and it looks like she is going to hand over a large sum of money to the charity.
However she could do with a wee bit more....so If anybody would like to make a donation please do so here to make a donation to a very worthy charity.
And what about Tom. You may not know this, but Tom was the race handicapper. His reputation as the Handicapper for Inverclyde AC had been noted. It was a concealed handicap race of course. Tom is still working out the times(could be for the rest of the year) but he has worked out the main contenders for the 1st Handicap prize and looks like he is going to be the winner with a handicap off 2hrs 54min 00secs. Told you he was good handicapper!!!!!!!!!!!!
Position 3501 Hazel Boulton (5185) 04:12:09
Position 6096 Thomas Tracey (2228) 04:54:46

Dam Fine Performances at Ayr - West of Scotland track and field champiopnships - 12th May 2012
There's also PBs for John Smillie Breaking 40mins at Troon 10k and The Gray Boys PB at Strathclyde Park Run
Inverclyde AC had the wide range of athletes travelling to Ayr to compete in the West of Scotland track and field champiopnships.
Leading the charge was two of the clubs top performing seniors in Mark Pollard and Craig Ruddy accompained by a host of young athletes keen to emulate the levels achieved by mark and Craig. The 1500m was a show down between Mark and Craig but with serious opposition coming from kilbarchan the duo were not going to have it their own way. As they got under way the wind conditions were not conjusive to fast running however Mark decided to take the lead being shadowed by the rest, this continued until 600m to go when Mark was passed with an injection of pace as the push for glory was one, reaching the back straight the Inverclyde duo were falling off the pace. Approaching 200m to go Craig made a move toward the leaders taking Mark with him, reaching the home straight it appeared only a bronze was on however Mark has returned to his competetive best and reached into his very deep reserves and pulled in the leaders to claim a popular victory in sub 4 minutes, with Craig being edged out in fourth.
Emulating Mark his young clubmates took on their respective age groups in the 1500m with Jonny Glen, Cameron Watson and Sean Gaffney all recording new personal bests despite the weather conditions.
Coming down in distance Greg Williams had the most challenging 800m with the lead changing throughout the race, with the back straight approaching victory seemed lost to Greg. Cleary Greg has been watching Mark and continued driving toward the home straight before lifting the pace and reducing the gap to the leaders 20m out from the line the strength of Greg proved decisive claiming victory in a time equalling his personal best. Callum Hunter also had the chance of improving his best over 800m and will be delighted with his performance which recorded him a new best.
In the sprints Shaun Toner returned the area to the top of the districts over 100m recording the fastest time of the day of 11 secs. Despite a false start Shaun refocused and exploded from the blocks, going through 60m he began striding out looking effortless as he sythed through the field to record Inverclyde's first sprint title for some considerable years. In the 200m he powered round the top bend approaching the home straight hitting the head wind saw him battle toward the finish line being pipped by the thickness of a vest for the sprint double.
Joining Shaun on the podium for the sprints was Evie Semple, fresh from her excellent performances in the Olympic stadium returned to earth with a bump inthe cold and windy Ayr, however another fine performance saw Evie securing another notable performance just outside her best.
Inverclyde's talents then moved to the field where Jill Magachy took the black and white stripes to new heights equalling her best of 1.30 over the high jump. Jill attacked a new increased level and just clipped the bar, this performance like some of her team mates should give her the confidence to take on these new challenges.
Inverclyde athletes acknowledge the support of Janice, Claire and Emma who were up very early, returning late to help each and everyone through their events.
Elsewhere there were PBs for John Smillie with a 39.22 at Troon on Wednesday . And what about Ryan(17.28) and Ross(18.37) at the Strathclyde 5K ParkRun.
Evie Semple represents Scotland at the UK Sainsbury Schools International at the Olympic Stadium
