Scottish Athletics Indoor League - 15th December
Inverclyde AC development of young athletes gained additional approval last weekend at the young athletes indoor league at the Emirates Indoor Arena in Glasgow
Following from the success of the cross country athletes it was the turn of the track athletes to shine, under 20 Shaun Tonner lead the team and set the standard with dominant victories in the 60m and 200m.
In the 60m the technique needs to be spot on as the race is over in the blink of an eye as the gun set the athletes off it wasnt long before Shaun was leading his competitors across the line for victory in a time equaling his best. In the 200m it was a show of dominance as he exploded from his blocks to pass athletes on his outside approaching the back straight running clear before powering down the home straight for an impressive victory in 22sec.
Equaling Shaun's dominance in the under 20 age group Evie Semple hit the front in the 400m after the first 50 and increased the distance over the competition, approaching the second lap of her race she moved through the gears to record victory in a new best setting her up well for the outdoor season.
Drew McIntyre competing in the under 17 category for the first time lived up to his pocket rocket reputation to run clear victorious over 60m recording a new best of 7secs.
Connor Malley returning after a well deserved lay off got back to winning ways as he raced clear in the 60m and equaled Shaun's double with an excellent 200m run which puts him back to the top of the sprint tree.
With IAC being at the fore Robyn Kelly fought hard during her 300m and as she approached 150m to go she came to life to run through another clear Inverclyde winner.
In the under 13 age group Nuala MacCheyne continued her rich vein of form with a tactical 800m gaining her team maximum points.
In addition the competition is used as a platform to allow athletes to explore new events and competition arenas with Scott McDonald and Scott Hannaway taking full advantage to record fine performances to allow coaches to progress their development.
There were personal best in other events with Robyn throwing herself to a new high jump best of 1.40m. Ashley Lewis who has tested herself over all distances and field events can now add new levels of ability to her shot putt and team mate Stephanie Docherty lowering her 60m below 9secs.

Scottish Athletics Awards Ceremony - 26th Oct
Childrens Coach of the Year...Rhona Bushfield
Inverclyde AC's Rhona Bushfield made a successful weekend complete after being announced 'Childrens Coach of the Year' at the Scottish Athletics Award Ceremony.
Rhona has been working with young children predominantly aged 5 to 8 in her mini's athletic programme for some 10 years concentrating on balance, agility and coordination.
Being the foundation and first rung on the ladder for Inverclyde AC development programme, Rhona has been recognised by athletics national governing body Scottish Athletics for her commitment, drive, enthusiasm and most importantly having the young person at the centre of her programmes.
The awards process involved a review of all Scottish Athletic coaches who coach children by the Director of Coaching Stephen Maguire, a short list is then drawn up and a full scrutiny of the coaches credentials undertaken before the announcement is made.
As Stephen Maguire commented the future of Scotlands top athletes rests with the coaches and to ensure athletes have the required building blocks in place to allow them to meet the physical and mental demands, coaches like Rhona are identified for their ability to do so safely and constructively.
Having her clubmates and fellow coaches with her to celebrate this great achievement, head coach and previous winner of Children coach of the year Janice Hendrie said 'This is due reward for the years of coaching Rhona has given to all youngsters within Inverclyde. Our development plan starts with Rhona who feeds into the other age groups and allows our other coaches to move through our Run, Jump, Throw programme with young athletes who have the basic skills in place to allow them to achieve their goals'.
Club President Gerry Gaffney said' I am immensely proud to represent all our members and coaches and I speak for all in offering congratulation to Rhona on this national achievement. This also underlines our commitment to the all round athletic development of young people'.

National XC Relays - 26th Oct
Inverclyde AC had a very successful weekend of athletics while competing at the Scottish Cross Country relays in Cumbernauld. The boys team endorsed their favorite tag by leading from start to finish in a very dominant display to collect their third successive National title and confirming the IAC development plan for young athletes as the best in the business
The pressure carried on the young shoulders of under 13 Cameron Watson, under 15 Ryan Gray and under 17 Jonny Glen should not be underestimated. On the first leg Cameron took all of 50m to get to the front and opened up a large gap over his competition as he covered the 2,5K course in confident style. Ryan set of and similar to the West championship his older challengers tried to haul in his lead, hitting the first real hill Ryan moved through his gears and opened the gap to conclude his lap in some style. With Jonny stepping onto the line for the anchor leg was sufficient to secure the psychological advantage and so it came to be as he brought Inverclyde home to their third boys title in as many years. Special mention should go to the coaches of these youngsters who over the years have worked tirelessly to ensure their youngsters are capable to challenge at this level, Janice Hendrie, Mark Pollard, Ian Cameron, Robert Gray and James Watson.
The feel good factor was felt by the ladies team of Rachael Bushfield, Emma Rice and Julie Gordon who for the first time made the top 10 finishers in Scotland. Rachael lead off before handing over to Emma who allowed Julie the targets to bring the team home in the top 10.
The senior men required to be at their very best to reach the podium but in Andy Douglas, Mark Pollard, Craig Ruddy and Dan Mulhare they were never going to come up short in guts and determination.
Andy set off on his first outing of the season and hit the lead early on, at the halfway stage the pace intensified with Andy dropping slightly off the lead handing over in 6th to Mark. Fresh from his marathon last week Mark was steady in the first half but as is his style moved through the runners in front of him and reaching deep into his reserves hauled Inverclyde into medal contention.
Craig set of in a bid to close in on silver and in doing so moved clear into bronze position before Dan exploded over the last leg and despite the clubs fastest run of the day and one of the fastest overall just ran out of space to win silver. Winning bronze was an immense feat on the day and added to the joy of the boys team who held the bragging rights on the way home.
Within the other teams John Cooke found his form from some time ago and scythed through the field to record a fabulously aggressive run and the fastest time outwith the 'A' team. County XC Relays and Marathons (20th Oct)
Inverclyde AC travelled to Pollock Park, Glasgow to contest the Renfrewshire cross country relays last weekend. An event where the under 11s get a chance to join their more senior club mates and as become the norm IAC made a number of trips to the medal podium.
Inverclyde AC gave their heavy artillery the weekend away to focus on next weeks National championships, giving the younger athletes the chance to shine. Their formidable under 17 trio of Ross Forbes, Josh Houston and Jonny Glen proved again too hot to handle as Ross set his team mates up after a first leg dogged by stewarding issues forcing Ross to race 2K over distance, Ross handled this well before Josh set off to maintain the teams focus before Jonny strode confidently round claiming the fastest lap as well as team gold. Under 13 Cameron Watson continued his purple patch leading the large field of under 13s around the heavy underfoot course to record that age groups fastest time of the day to equal his run last weekend at the district championships. In the girls under 13 Jennifer Lynn, Cliona and Nuala McCheyne were competitive through all their stage legs as they too joined Cameron on the podium to collect silver in the team race with Nuala receiving a bronze for the third fastest time of the day. The youngest age group of the day, under 11 boys Josh Law, Ross Davidson and John Morrison had set the medal haul rolling claiming a creditable third in the first race of the day. In the senior men and womens race the mens quartet of Callum Hunter, John Cooke, Graeme Hyett and Michale Houston carried the'A' team flag and were always in contention as Callum continued his development in the senior ranks on the first leg, recognition for his improvement over the last few months. John handled the second leg bringing the team closer to contention for medals before handing over to Graeme who gathered all his experience over the testing course before allowing Michael to bring the team home in an exciting finish sprinting ahead to secure silver. In the womens race Rachael Bushfield was a convincing victor reaping the benefits of her coaching programme before handing over to Emma Rice who kept Inverclyde in gold medal position before Julie Gordon despite her work levels going round enjoyed the experience of leaders from start to finish. The excitement caused by the 'B' team who were leading the 'A' team until the third leg thanks to a return from illness by Greg Williams who finished 2nd on the first leg, this was built on by Thomas Jamieson who is finding his form again. Robert Todd had the third leg before Sean Gaffney brought his team home 4th overall. Further afield Mark Pollard travelled to Amsterdam to compete in the marathon with 20,000 competitors Mark was one of the leading runners knocking off the miles reaching the finish in 2 hours 28 minutes with a top 30 placing. IAC other marathon man John Sharp slightly older than Mark was competing in the Abingdon marathon finishing 4th in a time of 2 hours 40 minutes., another fine run from John. Inverclyde head to Cumbernauld next week where expectations are high but every athlete will need to be at the top of their game to bring any medal home.

West District XC Relays (12th Oct)
Its was hat trick heros for Inverclyde AC boys trio of Cameron Watson, Ryan Gray and Jonny Glen who lead from start to victory in the West District Cross Country relays.
The teams made up of an under 13, 15 and 17 year old athletes running in that order has been very successful for IAC who are unbeaten in the past three years proving the development plan for young athletes is second to none.
Cameron Watson lead off in the under 13 stage and hit the lead after 50m, striding out in front of the remaining competitors Cameron was encouraged round by the vocal support reaching the last 300m lifting his pace securing a lead for Ryan to set off. In his first year of under 15 Ryan took the more mature athletes in his stride and worked deep into his reserves to hold the lead despite numerous challenges throughout the 2.5K course.
Jonny Glen took the baton in front and stuck to his simple tactics running the opposition into and past the pain barrier to increase his lead enjoying the applause as he strode into the finishing funnel to collect their and his third gold in three years, a hat trick seldom achieved.
In the senior womens race the trio of Emma Rice, Julie Gordon and Rachael Bushfield were looking to build on their performances over the last few weeks. With a solid start from Emma,Julie set off and began picking off the runners ahead of her reaching the change over zone and recording the fastest IAC run of the day before handing over to Rachael in 6th place. Rachael began stalking the runners in front and made her way into 4th reaching the last 400m, pulling in the 3rd place runner Rachael worked hard and was unluckily not to reach the bronze medal position.
With the senior mens team carrying high expectations after the past two glory weeks their was an opportunity for Neil McLaughlin to step into the 'A' team. Michael Houston lead the team out and set them up with a top ten finish. A return to the country for the former National champion Mark Pollard came down from his marathon distance to compete over the 4K course, its was a blast from the past as Mark hauled the team through to 6th place with an aggressive run. Neil had the pressure of the third leg and will benefit from his experience before Dan Mulhare exploded into life on the last leg. Dan a formidable athlete in full flow was making in roads to the leaders and despite racing to the fastest time of the day, like the womens team finished 4th.
In the girls races Nuala McCheyne, Ashleigh Lewis and Chloe Simpson lead the girls teams home with Nuala running one of the quickest under 13 times of the day. Ashley moving considerably up in distance from 100m sprints displayed fine team spirit to complete her leg before Chloe anchored the team home.
Coaches Mark Pollard & Ian Cameron will be pleased with their charges with Ross Forbes, John Cooke and Callum Hunter reaping the benefits of their training programmes becoming more aggresive competitors with each race.
In the older age group Gary McKendrick will secure excellent points as he recorded a fine victory over his clubmates.

McAndrews Road Relays (5th Oct)
Inverclyde AC tasted victory for the second week in a row with a fine win at Jordanhill, Glasgow at the McAndrew relay championship.
Recognised as the unofficial road relay national title IAC go back three years to find their name on the trophy.
The winning quartet had one change from last week with Greg Williams stepping into the 'A' team with Jonny Glen out due to his age. Greg joined Michael Houston, Craig Ruddy and Dan Mulhare. Michael lead off handing over to Craig who hauled in the leading runners to bring Inverclyde home in silver medal position. Greg coped well with the pressure of his first team outing passing to Dan who roasted round the course to record the fastest run of the day overtaking the leaders at the half way stage before powering home to his second gold in two weeks.
Additional glory for Inverclyde was the had the first 'B' team home of the race with Neil McLaughlin, Graeme Hyett, John Cooke and the clubs elder statesmen Gerry Gaffney securing that honour on the day.
After a forced lay off the sight of seeing Sean Gaffney back in full flow was added bonus and surely spurred the 'A' team to victory.
Next weekend sees the seniors having to cope with the juniors performances as the team head to Hamilton for the West District
