Boxing Day Race
A mix of young and old ran off the excesses of Christmas with 34 athletes runing in the Inverclyde AC festive get together. With all athletes starting together this was the chance for the younger athletes to cross the line ahead of their more elustrious competitors.
In the under 9, under 11 Georgis Morrison hit the front early on and lead the whole race home to be first across the finish line with Hannah McGeehan and Ciaran Hogg claiming the next podium finishes.
Matthew McKinnon lead home the under 13, 15 age group with a vary composed run knowing his senior team mates were bearing down fast. Shelby Morrison continued her rich vein of form to take silver with Sammy Heral third.
Jonny Glen was the best of the rest who competed over the three mile course and having recently gained his Scottish call up was not going to be handing a victory easily stopping the clock in 14.58. Sean Gaffney enjoyed another first three placing, with third being a photo with Stephen Cooke and the returning Craig Ruddy. It was pleasing for the spectators to see Craig back competing after some considerable time out, despite being given a slower race plan Craig decided a sub 16 was easily within his grasp and so it proved at the finish.
Inverclyde welcomed the attendance of Glenpark runners within the numbers and Andy White was the top placed athlete with a good sub 17 minute run.
Birthday girl Rachael Bushfield collected the top female finisher ahead of Irene McArthur.

Scotland u20 callup for 16 year old Jonny
(Jonny with Mo Farah)
After a very successful 2012, Inverclyde AC's Jonny Glen has been awarded with a call to represent Scotland at the Celtic Cross Country International in Wales at the end of January.
16 year old Jonny, a nominee for the local Young Sports Personality has been put through his paces by coaches Mark Pollard and Ian Cameron over the last few years with a gradual increase in his development to ensure he is capable of meeting the demands of the challenges he faces to be among the best young athletes not only in Scotland but UK wide.
Jonny has impressed the selectors with his results throughout 2012 so much so that he will represent the under 20 team, an honour for one so young but with Jonny's routine determination when he steps on the start line will see a performance befitting his selection.
Jonny's training team mates and coaches will ensure he receives no preferential treatment on the lead up to the race and will demand no less effort than has been evident in the past.
Coach Mark Pollard 'This is just reward for the performances Jonny has been producing but it is the first step in a very long and challenging ladder to success as a senior, but with hard work and committment Jonny and a few other local athletes can reach their goals'
All local athletes wish Jonny well in his representative travels.

West District XC - 8th December
Andy negotiating the mud
In the biggest athletic event held in Inverclyde for 30 years the West of Scotland athletes decended on Ardgowan Estate Inverkip to contest the West District Cross Country Championships.
With over 600 athletes registered to compete over arguably one of the toughest courses in recent times local athletes were looking to be at the forefront of all age groups.
Inverclyde AC's trio of Andy Douglas, Jonny Glen and Ryan Gray made the podium with Andy securing bronze in the senior mens race and both Jonny and Ryan dominating the under 17 and 13 age groups respectively to earn gold at the top of the pile. Ryan also lead the under 13 boys team of Cameron Watson and Reece Warnock to silver team award.
With 200 under 13s taking to the start line it was no surprise as Inverclyde AC duo Ryan Gray and Cameron Watson were within the leading pack with Ryan setting the pace from the gun. As the race progressed the young Inverclyde athletes were leading the race with Ryan producing another dominating run to confirm his status as the top under 13 endurance youngster in the country as he collected another title and victory to his trophy cabinet. Cameron in his first attempt in this age group should be delighted with his fourth place finish. Making the counting team of three was Reece Warnock who is progressing from football to athletics apace, such was his run the team were awarded silver missing gold by just one point.
In the under 17's an air of expectation surrounded this race as two of the hottest properties were going head to head in Euan Gilliham of Kilbarchan and local Inverclyde AC's Jonny Glen. Going into the second lap Jonny and Euan had broken free and were stride for stride at a fierce pace, as the course past the vast majority of spectators the noise level spured both athletes on as Euan gained a stride on Jonny however reaching the last 400m Jonny's determination saw him gain a small gap which was increased as his young team mates cheered him on to collect the title and his first victory on a head to head with Euan.
After such success the pressure was on for local sports personality Andy Douglas to emulate his young pretenders. Andy had the challenge of Scotland's top endurance athlete Kilbarchan's Derek Hawkins. As the 6 mile course proved a testing challange for the majority the small group of leaders ploughed through some testing under foot conditions with ease. Entering the second and final lap Andy was clear in a medal winning position and was working hard to claim the top award, however in Derek a formidable foe it was not to be as Andy secured bronze and the top placed local athlete.
Other notable performances came in all age groups with Gillian Carmichael being the top club finisher for the first time in the under 13 girls race with a tight finish with Sara ODocherty and Cara Hogg. In supporting Jonny in the under 17s Josh Houston, Callum Hunter were just outside the team medals.
Greg Williams was the top under 20 with a 6th place finish and is looking more comfortable over the testing country conditions.
Mark Pollard was leading the charge of the seniors behind Andy and will reassess his tactics prior to the bigger challenges ahead. Graeme Forbes produced another good run to make Inverclydes counting team and for the first time in a few races John Smillie rose to his captains role and secured the final counter for the team.
It should be acknowledged the months of preparation from a number of athletic partners it took to ensure this competition was the success it was should not be under estimated and a massive appreciation to all involved.

National Indoor Leagues - Sunday 18th Nov
On Sunday at the Kelvin Hall the National Indoor leagues was contested where all age groups up to under 20 saw nearly 1000 athletes from throughout Scotland competing. Inverclyde were to the fore with some excellent debuts and performances throughout the day Under 13 Conor Malley exploded onto the National scene with a hat trick of victories in his 60m, 200m and long jump. His first event, 60m drew the attention of the crowd such was the gap he opened up on the opposition. He was equally impressive in his 200m as the steep bankings at Kelvin Hall didn’t seem to phase Conor as he tore round to victory recording the fastest times of the day. In his long jump a jump over the 4m mark was sufficient to recorded his third victory of the day.
Also in the under 13 800m Cameron Watson fresh from his exploits on the Saturday ran a mature race to haul in the leader at the half way mark and strode past to hit the lead with 200m to go his facial expression clearly showed his efforts as he stopped the clock in a new best. In the youngest age group under 11, Inverclyde had a number of athletes participating for the first time., John Morrison enjoyed the indoor atmosphere recording excellent times in both his 60m and 600m. The club jumps coach Emma Steele will be pleased with all jumpers, despite no local long jump pit Niamh Ramage and Hannah McGeehan were first and third respectively in the standing long jump, added to Conor's victory hopes are high when the use of the stadium is authorised. Daisy Wilson enjoyed her indoor outing having participated the day before in the more challenging cross country conditions
Robyn Kelly competed in the under 15 age group for the first time and was delighted by a double victory in the 60m hurdle and 200m. After
a long day it was no surprise to see under 17 Evie Semple stride to the front of the under 17 300m, Evie's easy on the eye style camoflages the speed she is travelling at, with a concerted drive to the finish line was a clear winner recording a time just off her best. Josh Houston was competing for the second time over the weekend and ran a powerful 800m to record a new best, Josh will now build on this having discovered the strength to compete at a high level in consecutive days. Carrying the weight of expectation of his younger team mates speed king, Shaun Tonner was the fastest local athlete of the day with a 7second blast over the 60m before a very smooth 23seconds for his 200m.

County Cross Country Chamionships - Saturday 17th Nov
Greg Williams
A busy weekend for Inverclyde AC saw all coaches and volunteers assisting with 60 young athletes participating in a weekend full of athletic disciplines with endurance cross country athletes travelling to Linwood for the Renfrewshire cross country on the Saturday and the Kelvin Hall for the Scottish Indoor league on the Sunday.
On a very muddy demanding course at Linwood it was double figure delight for Inverclyde with 10 medals being awarded to Inverclyde individuals or teams. The crowning glory being the senior mens title. The team was lead once again by Mark Pollard who as part of his future plans wanted to lead the club despite a testing endurance session completed in the morning.
Mark had the support of a very tight knit run by team mates Greg Williams, Sean Gaffney, Michael Houston, John Cooke and Thomas Jamieson. Who finishing so close to one another secured an impressive score to regain the title won last year.
In the process Greg was the first under 20 athlete across the finish line after displaying a self belief over the longer distance. A welcome return to form by Thomas Jamieson saw him secure a fine finish to make the winning team. Just behind the first over 50 Gerry Gaffney fresh from his international success missed out on the counting team for the first time in over 30 years.
The under 13 boys race is a strong age group for Inverclyde with two of Scotlands top youngsters Ryan Gray and Cameron Watson leading the race from the front and at the finish had secured a one two for their race. Reece Warnock improving with every race was just outside the individual medals but was delighted with the team gold having finished fourth in the under 11 boys. Max Rice made the race his own from the gun and despite the horizontal rain at the time continued striding through the conditions to become the youngest winner of the day, joined by brother Leo and Ciaran Hogg the boys collected bronze for their efforts.
The popular under 17 Jonny Glen decided not to run tactically and had opened up a large gap after the half mile mark as his run progressed unobstructed this gap increased till the finish with Jonny collecting another title to add to his expanding trophy cabinet. Callum Hunter moved into second spot for the team with Josh Houston having his first outing of the weekend making the team scoring sufficient to win silver.
Emma Mitchell is now finding the form her training regime demands recording the fastest female for the Inverclyde club. Emma was emulated by the under 11 girls of Nyah Gillan, Niamh Ramage and Eve Mitchell who not only had the course to contend with but the worst over head conditions of the day undaunted the girls ran exceptionally well to win bronze.

National 4k and Development Races - 11th November
Inverclyde AC athletes were performing at Bellahouston Park last weekend competing in the National 4K championship.
The team lead by Mark Pollard fresh from his victory over the half marathon at Lochabar the previous week, when a wrong direction caused Mark to run some considerable distance off course. Despite returning on course at the back of the field Mark powered his way through to take the victory. This clearly left him heavy legged for the considerably shorter distance of 4K at Bellahouston. Despite this Mark was still to the fore and lead the team home for a top ten finish.
Greg Williams recently crowned Inverclyde top relay runner approached the second of the two lap race seeing Mark just in front of him and made effort to reduce the gap. Approaching the last 400m Mark found that extra gear to hold Greg off. Michael Houston once again claimed a top three finish for the club as his fast finish saw him close the gap on Greg to two seconds. John Cooke was the final counter for the club and with every race sees him close the gap on the leaders as his focus is maintained toward the National in February.
Graeme Forbes had a tremendous run as he enjoys the challenge of the older age group and with Gary McKendrick recording a best over the course it was a joyous day for the seniors.
In the junior development races earlier in the day Chloe Simpson took advantage of the under 17 boys and girls race to finish second, the best result of the day. In the under 13 age group Sammy Hearl had arguably the best performance of the day finishing just outside the medals after a very gutsy run over the very muddy course.
Further afield Gerry Gaffney was representing Scotland in the Belfast international and was an integral part of the Scottish team who secured a silver in the international event.

Youth to the fore in the Ferguson Cup - Saturday 3rd November
It was a three horse race from the gun at Inverclyde AC's opening club race in their winter championship.
Competing for the Ferguson trophy Stephen Cooke lead the pack being closely shadowed by young guns Greg Williams and Michael Houston, heading out toward the IBM plant Greg and Michael were using the experience of Stephen as they were experiencing their first outing over five miles. Reaching the climb at the turning point of Loch Thom Greg and Michael began increasing the pace and passed Stephen as both bid to record the first victory in the championship. With a mile to go Greg had opened a small gap on Michael with Stephen in third.
On the final straight Greg was a clear winner with Michael taking second and Stephen third. Stephen had the joy of recording the fastest handicapped time ensuring Inverclyde's future is in good hands as the winter championships are currently lead by the younger athletes
Behind the young guns it was Inverclyde's Msters Internationalist Gerry Gaffney who ran a solid race to ensure he is fully prepared for next weekend as he travels to Belfast to represent Scotland in an international cross country race.
Gary McKendrick will be pleased with his performance as he looks to increase his training regime now the shorter events have concluded.
There was a very welcome return to athletics from Duncan McFadyen who is ranked among some of the fastest 10K athletes the area has seen after celebrating his victory as Scottish Champion in a time of 29mins on the track for the 10K distance. Duncan who is off previous form still had the mental approach to assist Gavin Morrison to record a good time and the scalp of a previous national champion.
Inverclyde acknowledge the support recently received from Inverclyde Council.

Juniors retain National Cross Country Relay Title - Cumbernauld - Saturday 27th October 2012
Having retained the West District Cross Country relay title a few weeks back, Inverclyde AC travelled to Cumbernauld for the Scottish Cross Country relay last weekend, where last year both junior boys and senior men were top of the country and were returning to try and retain the titles.
The junior trio of Ryan and Ross Gray with Jonny Glen anchoring the team were first up. As the calvery charge of runners set off it wasn’t too long before the black and white of Inverclyde were to the fore with Ryan leading the pack being closly pursued by his team mate Cameron Watson. As the challenge of the course began to bite Ryan continued his relentless pursuit to hand over a big lead to big brother Ross.
On the second leg Ross was up against some of the finest youngsters in Scotland and did not look out of place as he kept Inverclyde among the contenders coming into the final 400m where a very determined run had Inverclyde 10secs behind the current leaders. In Jonny Glen Inverclyde have one of the most dogged determined athletes in the country and despite the panic of the watching clubmates Jonny bore down on the leader before the halfway mark and strode past leaving him with little reponse as Jonny enjoyed his last 400m savouring the support of all to retain the title of top boys team in the country for the second year in a row. Ryan and Jonny both had double celebration as they recorded the fastest times of the day in their respective age groups.
In the other young teams Cameron Watson maintained his improvement and recorded a time within the top 10 in the country similarly Ross Forbes who was the gold medallist two weeks ago will be pleased with his preformance. New boy Reece Warnock will continue improving when his structed training programme takes full effect.
In the young girls teams Inverclyde had 4 teams out who continue to develop in the competitive environment with Emma Mitchell for the second week in a row being the fastest 'Clyde' performer and one of the fastest under 15s on the day. The team of Sara Odocherty and Chloe Simpson joined Emma to finish in the top persentage of team across the finish and will now look forward to the open races in the weeks to come.
After the joy of the junior celebrations the senior men arrived and due to injury and a other commitments Inverclyde were without Andy Douglas and Craig Ruddy who were part of last years winning team, this gave the opportunity to Greg Williams and Sean Gaffney to join the elite duo of Chris McKay and Mark Pollard.
In the first leg Greg had a steady start trying to keep in contact with the leaders but with a very demanding second half he pulled on his reserves to bring the team home before Chris McKay set off, with a conservative start Chris disappeared from view only to return having moved into top gear and was passing other runners with relative ease as he pulled Inverclyde into the top 10, with the tiredness kicking in Chris was buoyed by the support driving him home to the change over where Sean Gaffney was unleashed. Sean was supported round the course by his team mates and was proud to represent the top area team prior to handing over to one of the most feared cross country runners in Mark Pollard. Mark used all his experience to bring Inverclyde through the field and despite his electric finish was just outside the medals for the first time in a number of years.
Michael Houston recorded one of his best runs of the relay season finishing just behind Greg and Thomas Jamieson recovered after his absence last week to record his fastest effort over the Cumbernauld course. Previous winner on the course Graeme Hyett is starting to look like his old self moving up the club rankings as the weeks go by. In the battle of the Robert's, Robert Gray clearly motivated by his boys victory recoded a fine victory over Robert Shaw.
After the successes of the day Inverclyde were represented by a number of junior and senior members who attended the Scottish Athletics Award ceremony in Glasgow where 'Clyde' were nominated for club of the year after there development and diversionary plan in relation to local athletics were examined by an independent panel who rated them in the top three in the country. The work conducted by Inverclyde AC in the local area was recognised on the night by Paralympian David Weir. With the juniors receiving valuable information and guidance from Scottish Olympic athletes Lynsey Sharp and Elidih Childs, all in all it proved a very productive day for the local club.
Inverclyde now move into the winter open races in the coming weeks, also any budding athlete put off by the winter weather can join Inverclyde for the Indoor races over the next few months.

West District XC Relays - 13th October
(Boys A-Team, J Glen, R Gray, R Forbes)
The first cross country race of the season took place in Kilmarnock contesting the West District Cross country relay.
Inverclyde AC's juniors travelled having won this title last year and with two of last years victorious team, Ryan Gray and Jonny Glen hopes were high. Ross Forbes was the third member carrying the weight of expectation for the area.
On the first of the three legs, under 13 age group, Ryan Gray stormed to the front from the off and began pushing hard over the very muddy course leading the procession of the West of Scotland teams. As the athletes began returning into sight of the spectators it was no surprise to see Ryan leading with a large margin. On the same leg Cameron Watson was having the best performance of his life occupying third spot as he chased Ryan down.
Changing over to the under 15 boys Ross Forbes had his first taste of pressure as he strode off in front, Ross who has progressed over the summer months and more than warranted selection as he lead on his leg being pursued by clubmate Ross Gray who appeared at home on the muddy course as he cruised round in one of the clubs fastest times.
Hitting the anchor leg the appearance of Jonny Glen sent a fear factor among the other racers as Jonny unsurprisingly sprang from the line hitting the front early on and built on his lead as he enjoyed the support of the areas supporters as he powered to the finish to regain the title of district champions,
Within the other boys teams robert Wilson, under 13 had his first experience of national competition and will benefit for that in the coming weeks. Matthew McKinnon moved up age groups and should be proud of his display. Under 17 Callum Hunter transferred his track experience to be a very competitive athlete on the day.
In the girls competition Inverclyde had a number of debutants out with Sara ODocherty leading out the under 13s team before handing over to Emma Mitchell in the under 15 category who recorded the fastest girls time of the day giving Chloe Simpson the confidence to chase down the girls infront of her bringing Inverclyde home further up the field.
In the under 13s Gillian Carmichael and Cara Hogg improved on their performances from the last race and will go into next weeks competition with renewed confidence.
As the seniors arrived the weight of expectation proved too much with injuries and illness affecting a number over the past week.
However this gave others than chance to step up and claim a spot for the coming weeks, on the first leg Michael Houston didnt miss his opportunity recording the fastest run of the day, close behind him Thomas Jamieson and John Cooke will also look to next week to place a marker before the national in two weeks time.
After nearly 40 years of athletic experience, Gerry Gaffney was at home on the challenging course, claiming a number of young scalps on his way.
