BOXING DAY RACES - SMILLIE'S MILES BETTER!
It was a fine festive turn out for Inverclyde ACs Boxing Day run with 30 runners taking to the start line. Starting on Eldon Street heading east before turning onto the Esplanade and finishing in the Battery park.
With measured distances for the younger age groups it was all to go for with the senior athletes chasing down their young colleagues. Cameron Watson strode into the lead and had the satisfaction of reaching the Battery in first place to record his first victory in Inverclyde colours. Nicola Doohan secured second with another gutsy run and Georgia Morrison completed the hat trick for the young athletes finishing third.
Despite all the talents of Craig Ruddy, battling against the head wind was slowing him down as the young athletes were reaching the Battery ensuing all under 11s, Hannah McGeehan, Samantha Dunning, Caleb Dunning and under 13s Matthew McKinnon, Sammy Hearl secured victory over one of Scotlands brightest prospects.
Chloe Simpson was first under 15 through the tape, edged out by the powerful running of Craig Ruddy who recorded the fastest time of the day a few seconds outside the course record held by Mark Pollard. Greg Williams and Sean Gaffney clearly suffering from the Christmas spirit ran together finishing the top three places but recording the same time. Club Captain James McFadden required all his talent to make sure the fast improving John Smillie didn’t add his name to the list of scalps falling to John this season who under the watchful eye of Cammie Spence continues to make great progress prior to the National cross country championships in February.
It was a family affair for the Bushfield's as Rhona and Rachel left father Paul in their wake to secure the top senior female places, with Susan Clark collecting the podium finish and the first spot prize award. Kenny Dunning collected silver spot prize with a fine effort in the demanding conditions. Club stalwart George Newman had his annual competition outing but suffered from his early pace as he fought into the head wind.
All athletes and supporters acknowledge the efforts of the race stewards, timekeepers and catering staff who ensured all were fed and watered at the prize giving.

Lawrie Spence - A life in Athletics - Wednesday 7th December 2011 @ 7pm - Quayside Suite - Waterfront, Greenock
Lawrie Spence, Lachie Stewart and Alistair Blamire
Inverclyde Local Athletics Partnership are proud to present an evening with Lawrie Spence - A life in Athletics - Wednesday 7th December 2011 @ 7pm - Quayside Suite - Waterfront, Greenock.
Lawrie Spence is one of our most successful athletes from the 1970s and 1980s and together with his brother Cameron they were the backbone of the success of Spango Valley AC during this period. Lawrie was a versatile athlete, and still appears on the Scottish all time list in no less than six events from the mile to the marathon.
The former Commonwealth Games 5000m finalist has won several Scottish Track Championships in the 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m and UK Championship medals as well as competing in 11 World Cross Country Championships. The former Scottish Team captain, GB Track internationalist and sub four minute miler will be sharing his experiences during his talk.
However the seminar should be of great interest to our younger athletes who were not around in that era as Lawrie currently coaches three young GB internationalists in Greenock. Lawrie will be explaining how he has adapted the fundamentals of his training for the modern context in which the athletes in his squad now compete. Its also for parents of younger athletes who want to gain further insight in what it takes to make it at International level and the support they can give their children. The talk will also be of interest to other sports as the messages will be relevant as they build up to the Olympics in 2012 and especially the Commonwealth Games in 2014 at Glasgow.

After the Gold Rush - Victories Galore for IAC at the 85th Renfrewshire XC Championships - 19/11/11
Senior Mens Team Title - RAAA XC 2011
IAC, Andy, Gerry, Thomas, Sean, Jude and Mark
Inverclyde AC had another gold rush on Saturday claiming 5 individual titles and two team titles at the Renfrewshire Cross Country championships at Rouken Glen Park, Glasgow.
Both male and female senior titles went to Andy Douglas and Emma Rice with age group titles to Ryan Gray, Johnathan Glen and Gerry Gaffney. Gold also went to the senior men and under 17 boys Team.
In the senior mens event Andy Douglas and Mark Pollard dominated the 85th Renfrewshire cross country . On this anniversary they followed in a long line of quality athletes to be victorious in the county championship.
Within 400m of the gun it was both Inverclyde athletes who were striding out for glory as they powered effortlessly over the muddy 6 mile course. Andy opened up a gap on Mark and was encouraged to drive on by his young support as he comfortablely coped with the pressure of knowing Mark was pulling on his reserves in a bid to close the gap. As the athletes reach one lap to go it was clear Andy was not to be denied victory as he strode clear to cover the course in under 30 minutes recording his first county title. Mark continued in to secure a one two for Inverclyde.
Emma Rice was the conqerour of all female runners as she produced one of her finest and strongest runs to emulate Andy by running clear of the field from the gun and increased the gap over her opposition with every stride to secure a very clear victory. It was a good day for the Rice family as young brother Max made the podium securing third in the under 11 boys. Max visited the podium for a second occasion and was joined by twin Leo and Cameron Purves as the young boys gained bronze in the team race.
In the young age groups Inverclyde athletes were to the fore with Ryan Gray producing another gun to tape run to secure victory in the under 13 boys, Ryan was supported by Matthew MacKinnon and Sammy Hearl who as a team secured silver.
Jonathan Glen was not to be over shawdowed as he too took the lead in a very aggressive style from the gun and ran clear of his fellow athletes to gain gold in the under 15 boys.
In the under 17 boys Greg Williams, Jack Rice and Michael Houston came in one behind another to secure victory in the team event handing coach Ian Cameron another team title for 2011.
Emma Mitchell was lead Inverclyde athlete in the under 15 girls with Evie Semple producing a strong run after last weekends sprinting heroics and supported by Chloe Simpson made the podium claiming bronze.
Despite the medal winning performances Sean Gaffney produced arguably the best personal run of the day being third counter for the senior mens team in a performance that ranks among the best he has given and will now use this as a springboard to catapult him to the standard his mentors believe he can reach. Thomas Jamieson had the most exciting finish of the day holding off David Henderson of Glenpark by the thickness of a vest. Gerry Gaffney gave another gutsy run and left some younger competitors in his wake as he showed how cross country running should be done claiming the over 50 title, again!. Jude Boulton was sixth man home for Inverclyde which proved to be decisive as Inverclyde were crowned senior team champions. As the results of the team race came through it was double celebrations for the area as fellow local club Glenpark secured silver ensuring Inverclyde athletes remain top of the pile in Renfrewshire.
Graeme Hyett, a triple champion in the past gave a warning of things to come with a very strong run over the course. Gary McKendrick completed his first cross country over the longer distance and will be proud of his 36 minutes for the 6 mile course.

Weekend Roundup - Bellahouston to Belgium - Saturday 5th November
Inverclyde AC athletes had another successful weekend of competitive athletics with young and old taking part in the Scottish National 4K championships and the Lotto cross cup in Belgium. At Bellahouston park in Glasgow the national 4K championships took place with additional invitational development races for young athletes. Inverclyde's young athletes and coaches were invited as recognition of their development plan and recent successes.
In the senior race previous double winner Dan Mulhare was missing due to training in Ethiopia so it was down to his clubmates to carry the torch for Inverclyde. Andy Douglas and Mark Pollard started as is their normal fashion, steadily with a powerful second half. It was Andy who progressed into the second half of the race well as he began slicing through the field and with 500m to go was heading for the top ten again his young clubmates were on hand to encourage Andy through as he progressed up the rankings and despite the very heavy underfoot conditions finished in fine style to finish 6th. Mark Pollard was closing fast as the competition wilted in the mud Mark skimmed over to record a marker for the ;longer challenges finishing just outside the top ten.
Their were personal scores to settle with Thomas Jamieson gaining a jump on Sean Gaffney and using the vast numbers of athletes in the finsh to sneak past for the local bragging rights. Robert Shaw returned and showed some fine form despite being at sea for the past few weeks and ran out of distance as he closed in on the much improved John Smillie. Tom Tracey also had a good run finishing strongly on the second lap. In the female race Julie Gordon carried the colours of Inverclyde with a fine run finishing in the top 25 of the huge field.
In the invitational young athletes races Inverclyde coaches Ian Cameron and Robert Gray encouraged their young charges to continue their recent successes and were not let down as Ryan Gray started the day with a very impressive gun to tape to claim victory in the under 13 age group in an impressive 7 minutes for 2K, the equivilant of two laps of the Battery Park. Ryan was ably supported by Matthew McKinnon, Craig Bellow, Sammy Hearl and Matthew Burns as all boys ran well as a pack and secured the team gold.
Jill McGachy gained more experience which will enhance her knowledge of competitive athletics with a solid run in the under 13 girls.
Emma Mitchell was the top 'clyde' performer in the under 15 girls with Jill Kelly recording a fine run securing her second home for the club.
In the under 15 boys Ross Gray and Josh Houston were always in the front pack and as the race entered the last half mile the medals were still to be decided, Josh Houston found an extra gear to ensure a podium finish with Ross seconds of the medals.
Greg Williams recorded another fine victory being relatively unchallenged from the gun recording victory in under 7 minutes, his other under 17 team mates, Michael Houston and Jack Rice made coach Ian Cameron proud as their training programme is paying dividend with impressive performances and very fast times for the muddy challenging course.
While most of Inverclyde were at Bellahouston Park Craig Ruddy was piting his talents against Europes best in the Lotto Cross Cup in Belgium. Craig stepped on the line with training stable mate Derek Hawkins against the elite of Belgium, Holland, Germany and a team from Africa. Craig who just missed out in a top 20 place last year went with renewed confidence such has been his recent form and started more aggresively. As the race developed Craig dug deep into his new found reserves and recorded a vast improvement on last years result moving forward 10 places and nearly a minute faster.

Supersonic Ruddy goes MACH 3 - Ferguson Cup 5 miler 29/10/11
Duncan McFadyen presents the Ferguson Cup to Craig Ruddy flanked by James McFadden (3rd) and Thomas Jamieson (2nd)
Inverclyde AC athletes competed for the Ferguson cup on Saturday. This trophy was first awarded in 1939 and is one of the oldest trophy's still around and the course record holder and sponsor for the day Duncan McFadyen of MACH 3 joinery was on hand to present to the winner.
Given recent performances it was no surprise that Craig Ruddy took the lead from the gun and was unchallenged over the 5.1 mile course. The changing wind conditions proved a more competitive force to one of Scotlands top athletes as he strode round the course recording victory in a very impressive time of 24.47mins 3 seconds off the course record. A relief for the watching Duncan.
Behind Ruddy, Gerry Gaffney led the chasing pack down the valley with Thomas Jamieson, James McFadden, Jude Boulton and Neil McLaughlin( making a welcome return to racing) tucking in behind Gaffney. As is the norm for the club president, Gerry pushed on aggresively into the head wind with McLaughlin first and Boulton second gradually falling off the pace before the turn. On the return Gaffney, Jamieson and McFadden were still together going into the last mile when Jamieson finally made a break. McFadden briefly lost touch with Gaffney and Jamieson but as the three runners climbed the final hill at Branchton station James found another gear and moved past Gerry and started chasing Thomas down. With 400m to go James passed Thomas to guarantee an exciting sprint finish. Jamieson's strength proved vital as he edged clear in the last 200m to finish second in a time of 29:14 with McFadden finishing third in a PB of 29:16. Next home was Jude Boulton who can also be pleased with a PB dipping under the 30 minute barrier with a time of 29:59.
Neil McLaughlin can be pleased with his performance for first race back and Gary McKendrick made a steady debut on this course as he pulled in the gap on Neil McLaughlin nearing the finish. John Smillie equalled his PB for the course finishing in a time of 32:08. Others recording good performances included Julie Gordon and George Heggarty who won the 'handicap' time of the day .

Scottish Athletics National Cross Country Relay Champions - Junior & Senior Men 2011 - Inverclyde AC
Scottish Athletics National Cross Country Relay Championships - Cumbernauld - Saturday 22nd October
The Inverclyde contingent celebrate the junior and senior national titles!
Inverclyde AC re wrote athletic history when they became the Scottish Junior and Senior champions at the National Cross Country Relay Championships in Cumbernauld on Saturday.
Inverclyde travelled with the heavy expectation on the senior quartet of Chris Mackay, Andy Douglas, Mark Pollard and Craig Ruddy to regain the senior title they won last year. However it was the junior trio of Ryan Gray, Jonathon Glen and Greg Williams who had a quiet air of confidence having secured the Renfrewshire and West of Scotland titles earlier this month. Under the watchful and protective eye of coach Ian Cameron all three, heavily supported by their young team mates began their preparation to compete for the national prize and make it a clean sweep of all relay titles available in Scotland.
On the first leg Ryan Gray set the team off in what has become the norm for the athlete who continues to improve with each race and by the half way stage had opened up a lead which his competitors were unable to live with . Ryan pressed ahead and began moving Inverclyde into a commanding lead as he handed over to Jonathon Glen. Jonathon stormed from the start line with his new found confidence and covered the course in a very aggressive manner increasing the Inverclyde's lead with every stride he took. With 400m to go the support seemed to lift Jonathon as he powered home to give Greg Williams a comfortable margin.
Greg set off with the added pressure of ensuring Inverclyde not only secured the title but that he recorded an impressive performance himself . Greg strode round with the very vocal support encouraging every stride, as is the case with anchor legs Greg pushed himself to perfom to the best of his ability and had the comfort of coming into the home straight the clear winners and Scottish champions. This trio of young athletes have now added themselves to the athletic history books as they are the first junior team from the Inverclyde area to claim the Scottish title and all other cross country relay titles available in the one year, a feat emulated by the seniors four years ago. In the other junior teams competing for Inverclyde Michael and Josh Houston and Ross Gray secured times under the impressive 10 minute barrier with Emma Mitchell and Chloe Simpson keeping the impressive performance to the fore for the girls.
With the junior celebrations under way the seniors were left in no doubt by their young clubmates on what was expected of them. Chris MacKay made a welcome return to competitive action and went out on the first leg which saw some of the fastest times of the day recorded . Chris battled his race rustiness to secure a place in the top 5. The ever reliable Andy Douglas set off with the intention of pulling in the front runners, despite the energy sapping course Douglas dug deep and reached the change over area handing over to Mark Pollard in fourth place. Pollard a veteran of how to compete over this course set off in his usual steady manner with a steely determination to get Inverclyde into a medal winning position. As others have discovered before, the second half of the course proved to be testing, however Pollard moved through his gears and began pulling the opposition in. With 500m to go Mark moved past two athletes and continued pulling on his very deep reserves to hand over to anchor man Craig Ruddy 14 secs off the lead. Ruddy blasted from the start under strict instructions from coach Lawrie Spence to dominate from the start. After 1K Ruddy hit the front and continued to move away opening up the gap on Central AC. Going into the final 1K Ruddy was feeling the strain of his early pace however with the constant ringing of the now famous Inverclyde bells and a very vocal support Ruddy carried the weight of expectation right to the finish to retain Inverclyde's national title and avoid any embarressing comments from the junior section. Ruddy also secured the fastest time of the day being the only athlete under 13 minutes. In the other senior teams personal battles were being contested with excellent runs from Sean Gaffney, Andy Campbell and a meterotic rise in the club rankings from Jude Boulton.
Inverclyde acknowledge the support of all supporters and non competing members who continued their vocal support till hoarse and the constant ringing of bells.

Renfrewshire AAA Relays - Pollok Park 16/10/11 - Sunday Best from IAC!
IAC - Fun in the sun at Pollok Park
On a sunny afternoon Inverclyde AC travelled to Lochinch, Pollok Park to compete in the Renfrewshire Cross country relays. With 7 podium finishes it turned out to be a very successfull Sunday afternoon for 'Clyde'.
This was the first relay competition where the clubs under 11s could take part and the trio of Georgia Morrison, Abby Campopiano and Samantha Williams set the tone for the day by claiming the first medal of the day with a bronze.
In the boys under 13 race Mathew McKinnon and Niall Smith set up an exciting last leg for Ryan Gray. With some considerable distance to make up Ryan raced off aggresively and with every stride brought the opposition closer resulting in a sprint finish securing the first gold of the day. In the other boys team Adam Stinson ran a very competitive first leg recording one of the fastest time of the day.
Notable performances also came from Samantha Dunning, Cameron Purves, Olivia Gemmell, Ashleigh Lewis, Jill McGachy and Matthew Burns in the U11 and U13 age groups.
Prior to the start of the under 15 and 17 age groups officials decided to run both together this increased the club rivalry between both age groups as the under 15s of Josh Houston, Ross Gray and Jonathon Glen fought stride for stride with their under 17 team mates Robert Todd, Michael Houston and Greg Williams. Under the watchfull eye of their coach Ian Cameron who was cajouling all his athletes to better things saw Jonathon Glen and Greg Williams on the last leg where Williams pulled in Glen and had a tit for tat battle with each other before a very exciting sprint finish saw both cross the line together recording the fastest times of the day and taking the first two team places. In the same race the girls under 15 Jill Kelly, Chloe Simpson and Kelly Williams joined the boys on the podium securing a silver in a solid performance of their own.
As the senior teams arrived the standard to achieve couldnt be higher however hopes were high with the addition of Andy Douglas to the 'A' team. Sean Gaffney lead the 'A' team off and he was accompanied all the way by Chris Barlas for the 'B' team. Chris's recent 1500m form was paying dividends as he struck for home with the finish in sight. Not to be outgunned Gaffney held onto Chris's coat tails and was pulled through to a top finish. The 'A' team had the comfort of relying on the class of Andy Douglas and so it transpired in the second leg with a gutsy run taking the team into second place with the 'B' teams Jude Boulton in hot pursuit. Andy Campbell found the form and belief his clubmates have in him to stride confidently into the lead on the 3rd leg handing over to Thomas Jamieson on the final leg who brought the team home in championship winning form to claim the RAAA Relay cup. Captain James McFadden took over from Gerry Gaffney for the B Team's final leg and began hunting down the athletes in front of him, such was his desire he fought the club into a bronze medal position to ensure two Inverclyde AC teams appeared on the senior podium. Congratulations to Greenock Glenpark Harriers who split the two IAC team to take silver ensuring all the medals were taken by the two local clubs. In the other senior IAC teams John Smillie was sparked into action recording one of his fastest races so far after seeing Kenny Morrison produce a very unexpected quality run over the very muddy course. John was heard to say afterwards...Who canae beat Kenny now!

Country & Western - Junior Boys are Number 1 - West District CC Championships - Drumpellier Park - 8/10/11
One Step Beyond!
Ryan, Greg and Jonathon - Junior Boys No 1
Inverclyde AC travelled to Coatbridge on Saturday when the West of Scotland cross country relay championship honours were up for grabs.
After two weeks of the club's top athlete Craig Ruddy grabbing the headlines the Young Team were determined to put on a show which would challenge Ruddy for recognition and in Ryan Gray, Jon Glen and Greg Williams they certainly did that claiming a comprehensive victory in the junior title.
All teams were made up from an under 13, 15 and 17 age groups. Ryan Gray set off first and as is his normal race plan hit the front from the gun and gradually increased the distance between him and the opposition as he bobbed along the muddy course before handing over to Jon Glen with a considerable margin over second place. Jon ran a very aggresive race despite being so far in front and worked himself hard to increase the lead as he handed to Greg for the anchor leg. Greg set off very quickly and it appeared only a matter of time before Inverclyde claimed the title, with the finish in sight Greg lifted his pace and looked very fluent as he basked in the victory at the finish.
In the girls relay Evie Semple displayed a talent which proves she can cope with the longer distance despite her sprint training. Emma Mitchell went in the anchor leg and progressed through the field to bring the girls home with a very impressive finish. Chloe Simpson returned to competitive action and will progress over the coming weeks bringing her back to her normal competitive self. Under 13 girls Robyn Kelly and Ashleigh Lewis and under 13 boys Sammy Hearl and Matthew Burns all competed in the black and white stripes and should be proud of their first taste of competitive action in the cross country.
After the joyous celebrations among the junior coaches, the seniors arrived and again Craig Ruddy rose to the challenge in the second leg for the 'A' team when he set off and cut through the field like a knife through butter recording the second fastest run of the day. He was matched in the 'A' team by anchor man Gerry Gaffney who for over 30 years has secured excellent performances and despite his progressing years was an example to his team mates of how to get the most from your body in competition. Andrew Campbell and Thomas Jamieson completed the 'A' team and both can pleased with their improving form as we approach the National Relays at the end of the month.
In the 'B' team there were excellent runs from Gary McKendrick and Jude Boulton who made a welcome return and will move up the pecking order in the coming races. Finally in the C team Kenny Morrison ventured onto the country for the first time in 5 years and was given no respite from the very vocal support from the junior section.
All athletes at the weekend pass on their thanks to Ian Cameron who is coach to the winning boys team and Lawrie Spence who has the responsibility for coaching Craig Ruddy as well as Elspeth Curran and Derek Hawkins who between them had the fastest male and female times of the day.

McAndrew Road Relays - Jordanhill Glasgow 1/10/11 - Ruddy records fastest time of the day
Gerry Gaffney races to the finish
Inverclyde AC had ten athletes competing at the McAndrew relays on a wet and wild October afternoon in Glasgow. Leading the A team off in the first leg was Thomas Jamieson who is now returning to form. Thomas worked his way steadily through the field finishing in a PB of 18:27. Thomas handed over in 13th place to Craig Ruddy who turned in another PB recording the fastest time of the day 15:32 pulling the team into 4th place. Sean Gaffney picked up the 3rd leg and worked tirelessly in no-mans land holding his position and recording a time of 18:18 and handing over the anchor leg to Andrew Campbell. Andrew put in a spirited performance though his lack of mileage in recent weeks showed as he faded to 8th place in 18:53. Andrew will benefit from the race and will hopefully be able to get back to form over the cross country relays.
The 2 man Captain's team saw James McFadden make his return to racing after a virus to record a steady performance finishing in 19:07. Track Captain Kenny Morrison ventured on to the roads for the second week in succession putting in a workmanlike performance and a stylish sprint finish to record a bingo callers time of two little ducks 22:22.
The Inverclyde Vets team had a fine performance on the day finishing just outside the medals in 4th place. Robert Shaw got the team off to a good start producing a tireless run to finish in 21:03. Robert handed over to Gerry Gaffney who produced a marvellous performance recording an excellent time of 18:29 which was the fastest by an over55 on the day. Gary McKendrick took the 3rd leg and produced another gutsy performance to come home in a time of 19:51. Bringing home the 4th leg for the Vets team was John Smillie. John worked hard on the 4th leg though was slightly disappointed with his time of 21:57.
Ronhill Cambuslang won the mens race with a time of 1:06.03 and Garscube Harriers were the winners of the womens race with a combined time of 59.38.

Kilbarchan AAC - George Cummings Relays - Sat 24/9/11
Emma Rice races into 3rd place in the ladies race at Houston
Inverclyde AC’s men’s A team finished 5th overall and took team bronze in the Renfrewshire AAA Road Relay Championships at a sunny Houston on Saturday. Top man for the Club and the A team on the day was Craig Ruddy on the third leg who always seems to run well over this 2.7 mile course. Sean Gaffney took on the difficult first leg for the A team and had a close battle throughout with Greenock Glenpark Harriers Steven Campbell. It was nip and tuck until the final hill where Campbell managed to open a gap on Gaffney that he held to the changeover.
Youngster Greg Williams making his A team debut went off like a rocket in seventh place, but the fast start took its toll on the hills. Despite this Greg had managed to pull in one place to come home in sixth place overall. Greg has come through the excellent development programme for young athletes under Coach Ian Cameron, with Greg a National medallist since u13s and has now reached the senior A team.
Craig Ruddy took over on the third leg in hot pursuit of his training partner Derek Hawkins of host club Kilbarchan AAC. Craig worked his socks off on the third leg to record an excellent new PB time of 12.36 and in the process moved the team up to third. Craig’s time was also the second fastest of the day only beaten by his training partner who also clocked an impressive time of 12.29. It just goes to show that if athletes of similar ability train together they can bring each other on.
The difficult anchor leg was taken on by Gerry Gaffney who put in his usual tenacious performance to bring the team home in fifth place overall and third in the Renfrewshire Championships behind Renfrewshire winners Kilbarchan AAC and Giffnock North AC. Winners of the men’s open event was Shettleston Harriers.
Best runs from the B team came from Thomas Jamieson and young Michael Houston. It was also good to see Graeme Hyett back competing and will only get better as the relays progress. Gary McKendrick made a very impressive debut for the C team to clock an excellent PB time. John Smillie who has made great strides this year also clocked an excellent new PB for the C team. Emma Rice also had a very impressive run for the composite team, with Emma showing great determination and battling qualities to finish third lady finisher on the first leg ahead of the winning Kilbarchan AAC ladies first leg runner. Hopefully the Club can get a ladies team out during the coming relays. With Emma finishing so high up Tom Tracey set off in trepidation, but still managed to produce a good solid run. One other excellent PB run came from Damien Mallet on the third leg for the composite team.
Inverclyde AC times:

IAC Mile - Battery Park 17/9/11 - Williams it was really something!
Greig receives The Mile trophy from Club President Gerry Gaffney and Viking Morrison
IAC held their annual mile handicap race at the Battery Park on Saturday morning. Twenty four runners across the age groups from u11s through to our old and wise President lined up at the start. With all the runners setting off at staggered intervals as dictated by Handicapper Kenny Morrison it was an intersting race which unfolded for the spectators. In the end Greg Williams prevailed and was a worthy winner of the handicap mile. Starting as the scratch man, Greg worked his way from last man right through the field overtaking everyone and finally charging past James McFadden in the last twenty metres to win in convincing style in a time of 4mins 42 secs. First lady home was Chloe Simpson who finished in a time of 6.27. There were many other fine performances on the day including that of handicapper Kenny Morrison who ensured a close finish at the end. Thanks to all spectators for their support and to all the officials for their time and assistance in managing another well organised race

Inverclyde & Glenpark Joint Trial Races - Saturday 10th September - Esplanade Greenock
A Brolly Good Day's Racing!
On a wet and windy Saturday when 'PA16' were basking in lottery excitement Inverclyde AC opened their winter road and cross country running season with the competition for the 75 Trophy. This was the introduction and launch of the Inverclyde Local Athletic Partnership and Inverclyde AC and Glenpark Harriers athletes raced together to formally recognise the official beginning of the partnership. Inverclyde's under 15 Scottish internationalist Jonathon Glen set the standard for his senior club mates to follow when he darted into the lead as the gun went and increased his lead gradually over the field as the race progressed to win in an impressive sub 10mins for 3K , edging his training partner Josh Houston into second recording a time just short of the 10min barrier. Emma Mitchell returned to winning ways taking the girls title from Chole Simpson, both covering two lengths of the Esplanade in 12mins.
In the younger under 11 age group it was a family affair with Max Rice recording victory over brother Leo, who just pipped Georgia Morrison in the run in with Georgia taking the girls title. Matthew MacKinnon had a dominant run in the under 13's to be first boy home, the girls Under 13 saw a tussle between Jill McGachy, Robyn Kelly and Alison Louse with Jill striding clear over the last few metres to claim victory.
After the excitement of the junior races the senior athletes took to the start and after watching the impressive Jonathon Glen, Craig Ruddy blasted from the gun and struggled to take the bend into the Esplanade such was his pace. Ruddy continued this pace and dug deep into his reserves on the way to the finish to record a very impressive victory in atime of 12:15 ahead of Glenpark's Stephen Trainer who's own performance secured him the Glenpark Senior Championship for a second successive year. In third place for Inverclyde was under 17 Greig Williams showing his older team mates how its done with a cracking 13:24 for the course. James McFadden continues his return to form just holding of another talented under 17 Michael Houston. Jude Boulton made a welcome return to racing finishing strongly over the 4k course and the relays should see him hitting some form. Another to shine on the day was Robert Shaw who had a fine race finishing ahead of John Smillie for the first time this summer.
Emma Rice was first lady home from Julie Gordon and this should see Emma return to full training and return to her competitive best. Other good performances came from Gerard Cook using the race for preparation for track work gained the award for most impressive finish.
Special mention must go to coach Ian Cameron who has moulded his under 15 and 17 teams into impressive competitive athletes.
Thanks go to officials Janice Hendrie, Rhona Bushfield, Emma Steele, Kay Murdoch, Peter McLaughlin, George Newman, Ian Cameron, Robert Shaw, Claire Kelly, Kenny Morrison and Stevie McLoone and to all at Glenpark for their hospitality after the race.
Inverclyde wish Julie Simpson and Cameron Spence best wishes and a speedy return to health

Scottish National Inter District Championships - 27/28th August - Silvers for Shaun and Greig
Best in the West 800m 2011
A successful Scottish National Inter district championship was achieved by Inverclyde Ac's under 17 athletes Grieg Williams, Shaun Toner and senior athlete Chris Barlas. On a perfect day on Saturday Greig Williams stormed round the two laps pushing into his reserves of energy to complete the 800m in a new personal best 1min 58secs, this time taking him into the top times for local athletes this season. Added to this was a massive points boost to the West team with Williams winning silver in his event.
Shaun Toner sparkled in the 200m by exploding round the bend and was in contention coming down the home straight, Toner's training has been geared toward improving on his last 50m and this proved invaluable as he smoothly pulled ahead to secure another silver for Inverclyde athletes and major points for the West with a time just a fraction off his best, 23sec.
On the Sunday the senior athletes were faced with the wind as the competition turned into tactical racing due to the strong winds. Chris Barlas currently the areas top 400 and 800m runner was pitting his talents against the best in the country. Again Barlas was unphased as he shadowed the aggressive pace and with one lap to go was in contention for the major places. As has become the norm with Barlas his fighting ability shone through as he moved into overdrive on the home straight to secure fourth place in 1min 57secs in the last national track competition of the season.
All three athletes now bring the curtain down on what has been a very successful season with personal bests and Scottish national trophies to reflect on as they prepare to build on these achievements in the winter months.
September is shaping up to be the busiest and most exciting month of the year with so many races and Club events coming up thick and fast. This coming weekend sees the Great Scottish junior and senior runs taking place in Glasgow. The next Committee Meeting is on Thursday 8th followed by the joint trial races starting in the Battery Park on Saturday 10th. Hopefully both clubs will support this in large numbers. There is also the Millport 10 miler on Sunday the 11th. The AGM is scheduled for Thursday 15th followed by the Sport Inverclyde Kilmacolm races on Sunday 18th. This is followed by the Kilbarchan relays at Houston on Saturday 24th. On the evening of the 24th the Club also has its annual prize giving night in the Ardgowan Bowling Club. Finally the Clubhouse is also scheduled soon to reopen again after being massively water damaged due to a burst pipe last winter. Members are asked to not go into the Clubhouse until it is finally handed over.
Cowal 5K Report - Dunoon 25/8/11
On the first day of events at the Cowal Highland Gathering in Dunoon Inverclyde AC had a few athletes competing in the Cowal 5K road race on Thursday evening in perfect warm still weather conditions. In the event dominated this year by our near neighbours Greenock Glenpark Harriers on the night Sean Gaffney was the Clubs first finisher. A runner up last year he had to settle for fifth place this time. Despite disappointed at finishing fifth Sean was only one second slower than last year. Greenock Glenpark Harrier Stephen Trainer made it a Highland Games double after his success at Bute last weekend for the second year in a row to take the Graham Clark Memorial Trophy clocking a new course record time of 15.59. The next three finishers also Glenparkers all excelled to set new 5K PB’s One of their most improved runners David Henderson was also an excellent runner up to Stephen, with David Running 48 seconds faster than last year. It was close for third and fourth between Michael McLoone and Steven Campbell. It was Michael one of the top veterans in Scotland in his age group who took the honours in this battle, but Steven must also be very pleased with his run.
Thomas Jamieson was the second Inverclyde AC finisher in seventh place overall with an excellent run on the night. It was close between the next two Inverclyde AC runners, with James McFadden just holding off team mate Gerry M Gaffney for eighth place. Gerry’s time coincidently was exactly the same as last year. Of the others John Smillie in 16th place once again had another very good run and used his sprint finish to edge out team mates Robert Shaw and Frenchman Damien Mallet. Also Sam Way had another solid run in the event and Les McMahan was over the moon at knocking over a minute off his last 5K race. Other good local runs came from Greenock Glenpark Harriers Michael Harrington in 14th place equalling his PB , Liz McAuslan and former President Tommy Knight who held off the strong challenge from team mate and former Club Treasurer Richard T Hodelet.
It was very very close in the ladies race, with unattached senior lady Claire Kennedy just holding on to take the win just four seconds ahead of under 15 girl Chloe Simpson of Inverclyde AC. Chloe had the consolation of taking the first junior female prize. The first junior male prize went to Glenparker Andrew Fisher in an excellent PB run in 11th place overall and the winner of the Willie Jukes Memorial Trophy for the first local Dunoon runner went to Roger Stewart who finished in 21st place. It was also good to see Glenparker Jim Sheridan, Joy Hodelet and local Santa Dash organiser Tommy Armstrong taking part in the event again, with this being his second race of the day. Thanks to Cameron and Helen Spence for the registration and the presenting of prizes and to Peter McLaughlin for the results and to everyone that helped to steward.

Barlas records back to back PBs over 800m and 400m.
Chris Barlas - 2011 - A summer of PBs
Inverclyde AC's Chris Barlas continued his impressive season at the Scottish athletic league meeting at the weekend, recording two personal bests and the area's fastest times so far this season. Barlas who has recently returned to competetive athletics has the benefit of being coached by his old school mate, Scotland's Assistant endurance coach and 'Clydes' elite athlete Mark Pollard.
First up was the 800m and Chris made his usual aggressive start shadowing the pace before making a concerted effort with 300m to go where his flowing style paid dividends as he continued to move through the gears reaching the line in a time of 1.56min. In doing so Chris has taken over 4 seconds off his personal best since the start of the season.
Within two hours Barlas was back on the track this time moving down in distance to test his speed over 400m, an event at which he is still a relative novice. Chris' lack of experience over 400m did not deter him as he powered from the start to hit the back straight in contention for the major placings. Once again his easy free flowing style gave him an edge, coupled with a newly developed arm action which saw him power down the home straight to finish two seconds faster than his best in 52sec.
Chris has now recorded personal bests over 400m, 800m and 1500m all within three weeks of each other. An impressive array of races for an athlete who will be a force to be reckoned nationally come the winter season.
Forthcoming events: This Wednesday 17 August sees the final DunRen Open Graded Track and Field Meeting taking place at Linwood. On Saturday there's the Bute Highland Games at the Meadows in Rothesay including the 10k road race from the Meadows to Port Bannantyne and back.
Finally a special mention for Shettleston Harriers Open Graded meeting on Tue 23rd August at which there will be a special race to honour Alex Naylor MBE .
As most will be aware Alex was Mr Endurance coach for many years in Scotland /UK . Shettleston have picked the 3000m this year and are hoping for a fast time following on from last year's 5000m when IAC's Dan Mulhare ran close to 14mins ( the fastest 5000m in Scotland for many years ) A pacemaker has been secured who will take the field through close /under 4mins for the first 1500m . IAC's Lawrie Spence has commited to bring athletes to the event and others who have agreed to run include Matthew Gillespie ( ran 8.12 last week ) and Twelde Mengisteab (current Scottish 5000m champion ). Most of the other Shettleston guys will also run. The event will start at 8pm .

Frank Sinclair Memorial 10K - Sat 4 June - Mick McLoone cruises to first road race victory
Congratulations to Michael McLoone of Greenock Glenpark Harriers who showed the field a clean pair of heels to comfortably win Inverclyde AC’s Frank Sinclair Memorial 10K Open Road Race in windy conditions on Saturday. Michael running his second 10K in the space of three days completely dominated the race from start to finish to win by a comfortable margin of almost a minute and a half clocking a winning time of 34 minutes 48 seconds. It was very close for second and third between Danny McLaughlin of Greenock Glenpark Harriers and the first ever winner of this event in 1984 Gerry Gaffney of Inverclyde AC. It turned out to be a very tactical affair, with Danny on this occasion winning the tactical battle sheltering behind Gerry into the wind on the return journey and then outsprinting Gerry at the finish for second spot. Stuart Hodge made a welcome return to racing action to finish fourth overall and Stuart must be pleased with his first race back. With the first four athletes all being veterans the first non veteran senior man was Jude Boulton in fifth place also running his second 10K race in three days, with Jude having another excellent run. Greenock Glenpark Harrier Frank McKnight had another solid run and was the only other athlete to break 40 minutes in sixth overall. Stevie Hards of Kilbarchan took the male veteran prize finishing eighth overall. Euan Leslie was the first unattached male finisher in tenth place. Pamela McCrossan of Clydesdale Harriers took the ladies win for the second year in a row with another excellent run. The first unattached and second lady was Lorna Brown. Fiona Cushnaghan of Greenock Glenpark Harriers was the third lady finisher. Other good runs came from Inverclyders James McFadden and George Hegarty. Also Glenparkers Kevan McCartney, Brian McCluskey and David Carruthers and Jim McMillan of Kilbarchan AAC. Thanks to everyone that helped with the timekeeping, results, catering, raffle, registration and stewarding that proved a bit more stressful this year. Just ask Tom! Thanks also to Gerry at the presentation and Bill Stoddart just turned 80 years young last month for presenting the prizes once again. Thanks also to photographers James McFadden and Jim Sheridan and finally to the friendly helpful staff at Ravenscraig Sports Centre.
Elsewhere on Saturday Andrew Douglas continued his dominance of the Edinburgh Parkrun 5K winning for the 11th time in 15.55.
Senior man Chris Barlas also produced an excellent run to win the Kelvin 5K Road Race clocking a time of 16.44. Ryan Gray also took second place with the best performance of any Inverclyde AC athlete at the weekend junior or senior. Under 13 boy Ryan clocked an outstanding new PB of 17.06, with Ryan’s older brother Ross also finishing in an excellent fifth place overall in 18.31.

Weekly Roundup - 30/5/11 - Scottish Masters - MOK Half Marathon - Clydebank 10K
Kenny Morrison produced another masterful performance at the Scottish Masters Track Championships at the weekend retaining for the 3rd year in a row the 400m hurdles title . Never one to rest on his laurels Kenny went one better this year and went on to win the 800m too! Well done Kenny!
James McFadden took the long and winding road to Campbeltown for the Mull of Kintyre Half Marathon, voted the UK’s No 1 half marathon by Runners World readers (joggers :-) The MOKrun festival offers both a 10k or the half marathon distance and the 750 places were full by the end of January. The Half Marathon was a race of two halves this year...Into the wind to Machrihanish and gone with the wind on the return to Campbeltown. James managed to stay in the chasing pack trying to get some shelter over the first seven miles into the teeth of the Atlantic cross winds and head winds. Coming off the raod at 5 miles there was a wee bit of cross country over the Machrihanish golf course links down the dunes and a half mile out and back on the sands, skirting the breakers as they crashed onto the beach. Hitting the half way mark in 9th place in just under 47 minutes, the return was slightly more forgiving with the wind either being a cross wind or tail wind. James managed to pick the pace up in the second half pulling in two places to finish 7th in 1:29. The seniors race was a close affair with Greg Simpson and Kenny Campbell inseparable over the 13 miles until Simpson managed to outkick Kenny over the last half mile finishing seven seconds in front in 1:19:02.
Three Inverclyders took part in the 2nd event of the Polaroid series the Clydebank 10k on Thursday evening with all three runners recording faster times than the previous week at Helensburgh. First home once again was Carrie Gibson with another very good run finishing in 40.25. Next was Robert Shaw in 41.17 with JohnSmillie not far behind in 41.53. Erica Cromar did not run due to injury, but was there to cheer us on. Andy Osborne also ran clocking a time of 43.00.
Weekend Roundup 22/5/11 - Edinburgh Half & Marathon - Grangemouth SAL and Loughborough IAM
At the Edinburgh Half Marathon Andy Douglas kept the winning streak going winning in 66.49 and it looks like his old man is not a bad runner either. Now we know who he takes it from! And what about Julie Gordon's 3hrs 23mins 10secs in the Marathon. Another PB! You lads need to watch your back. Her training partner, Melanie McKenzie was 4 hrs 07 mins. She missed the last 2weeks of training with an ankle injury. Hasn't put her off though.Tom 'the Handicapper' Tracey came home with 4 hrs 00mins and 5secs. If only Tom would do some speed work he could have sprinted that last 100 metres and got below the 4 hrs. Tom sprinting, naw.
Further up the River Forth the senior track athletes were also in action at a very windy Grangemouth stadium competing in the Scottish Athletic League. First on show and setting the standard was Kenny Morrison answering a late call to fill in over 400m hurdles, despite a considerable period between his last outing over hurdles Morrison managed to call on his vast experience to gain fourth securing valuable points for the team. Chris Barlas continued his development over 800m taking the lead from the gun striding confidently into the strong head wind and was unfortunate to be pushed into fourth (2:01.20) by those who benefited from Chris's protection from the wind. Undetered Barlas took on a quality field over 400m after only one hour recovery and showed some aggresive pace running to gain a top podium finish (54.07).
The 1,500m saw a quality line up with 'Clydes' Craig Ruddy running strong from the front, seeking a fast time despite the conditions. As the race developed Ruddy pushed the pace on spreading the field over the length of the straight reaching the final straight and last few strides Ruddy again ensured Clyde athletes were at the forefront of the race finishing in 4:03:94. Sean Gaffney managed another 5K on the track and ran well 17:19 to be within a whisker of a season best.
Down south on the track Chris MacKay was in action for Scotland at the Loughborough International Athletics meeting competing in the 1500m. Chris came home 10th overall clocking a seasons best time of 3. 51. 57. Chris’s team-mate at his English club Newham & Essex Beagles - James Shane took the win in a season’s best time of 3. 43. 58.

A Haile memorable trip to Ethiopia - Andy Douglas takes the high road!
Oor Highlander meets Haile!
Andy Douglas added another memorable chapter to his successful year with a victory in Ethiopia and some remarkable memories he shares with us now...
After an overnight flight into Addis Ababa we had a packed 1st day of sightseeing, but managed to get a 10-miler in around the city thus confirming my role as top OCD runner in the group! Made it to the famous Meskel Square, following in the footsteps of many of the great Ethiopian runners – pretty inspiring stuff! We were up early the next morning to get the bus to Hawassa, around 250km south of Addis Ababa, and venue for the half marathon we were participating in. We were staying at Haile’s resort – v plush indeed! Saw the great man himself a couple times in the evening – kindly wishing us all luck for the race the next day (we’d need it – 1700m altitude and temperatures up to 30 degrees by the end!)
The race itself kicked-off at 6.30am – which at first seemed daunting but by the end we were all glad as when the sun comes out it gets HOT! Not being in great shape before coming out here, I decided to take it out conservatively, but hit the front early on with only one other runner for company. We covered the 1st 5k in 17min and with my breathing still controlled tried to maintain that pace. Things were going well, and with just one lap of the course left (approx. 6k) I’d built up a comfortable lead, however thanks to my misguided police escort he took me 700m up the road towards the finish rather than to the start of the final lap so after being confronted by a manic marshal I turned around and ran back another 700m to the start of the last lap! The 2nd placed runner had followed me so he turned when I passed him, though had no idea what place I was in. Around a km into the last lap I noticed a runner ahead (by this time we were lapping others) that I thought must be the leader. I pulled up onto his shoulder and he stuck with me for a few hundred metres before falling back, meaning once again I was out on my own. The last 3/4km were really difficult – legs were tiring, breathing was getting heavier and with the sun now beating down I was beginning to get quite dehydrated. I started to nervously glance over my shoulder as the last thing I wanted going into the finishing straight was to be involved in a sprint finish with one of the locals! Luckily I saw no one in close pursuit so I tried to ease off and just focus on getting to the finishing line. Eventually I crossed the line in 78min 23s (that includes the extra 1.4km), and straight away Haile was there to congratulate me – then a surreal moment happened when he handed me some water then began to pour some more over my back, couldn’t believe the greatest runner in the world was doing this for me! The next runner was around 90s behind so I had time to compose myself and string a few random words together before being escorted off for an interview with Ethiopian TV – fortunately it was conducted in English although I had to ask the interviewer 3 times to repeat the last question before giving up and making up my own answer to a question she didn’t ask!
Various entertainment and presentations ensued after the race – watched the elite men’s race finish, with a Kenyan upstaging some of the best of Ethiopian to win in an incredible time of 63min … (just to add, this fella was runner-up in the last two Great North Run’s and has a PB of sub-60min!).
As if the day couldn’t get any more surreal, in Haile’s post-race speech he highlighted my victory in the non-elite race (he referred to me as Irish, which you can imagine was quickly corrected – can’t be having him mistake me for Dan Mulhare!) and proceeded to invite me to come back next year and run in the elite race as the first non-African to do so: holiday 2012 sorted!
We made our way back to Addis later that afternoon, and in the morning most of the group headed back to UK. After another day spent sightseeing in Addis I was desperate to head up to the hills and forests in Ararat where I was told most of the Ethiopian national squad train – I wasn’t left disappointed. Running bright and early at 6am I was running amongst some of Africa’s finest. Adjusting to the altitude was proving tricky so sessions were at a minimal, but I was putting the mileage in and training 3 times a day from Tuesday to Friday. Once I felt I was getting to grips with my breathing, my legs were becoming tired, but I felt my general fitness and strength must have improved. To be running though in the presence of so many great, hardworking and dedicated athletes was incredibly inspiring – many gave me genuine shouts of encouragement and joined in to run with me. From understanding their lifestyle and approach to running it’s easy to see why these guys are so successful – they are passionate and relentless in their quest for running glory. Yes they have the advantage of the altitude but that doesn’t count for anything without the effort required to train effectively in those conditions. I will now be a big supporter of altitude training, although to be able to gain the most out of it, sessions at sea-level have to twice as hard!
Another highlight I have to add was being able to see some of the Ethiopian National Athletics Championships – of course it had to be the men’s 10,000m that I made sure to see! An incredible race, won in the last 50m with that oh-so-typical Ethiopian-style kick. The atmosphere in the ground really made it what it was, I estimate around ten thousand were in the stadium to see it – a real shame that it isn’t replicated at our national champs (if only the crowd there was as passionate as at Hampden…).
The only regret I leave with this trip was not being able to hand over personally your very generous contribution of running gear – however I left them in the very trustworthy hands of the Great Ethiopian Run organisers in Addis whom were my point of contact during my stay out there. They have close connections with many running clubs in the city so I’m sure they’ll find worthy recipients. They asked me to forward on their great appreciation for your donations.
Phew! So much more I wanted to add but could have gone on all day! Once again, many thanks for all your support, it was a great honour to be out there representing the club. Look forward to seeing you soon!

Congratulations Andy and thanks for taking the time to share the experience with us. You are a great ambassador for Scotland, Athletics and Inverclyde AC.
Senior Loughborough Trials - Scotstoun Stadium - Glasgow - Sunday 8th May
Derek Hawkins, Matthew Gillespie and Chris Mackay
Inverclyde AC athletes represented the club at the Senior Loughborough trials at Scotstoun stadium on Sunday. Events were slightly delayed due to torrential rain however when the weather cleared conditions were ideal for fast times.
First up for Inverclyde was Chris Barlas in the 800m. In a strong field Chris had an even paced race clocking 2 x 60sec laps finishing in 2:00mins.Whilst slightly slower than his last outing at Linwood, Chris was happier with his overall performance and will benefit from the experience of another race under his belt.
In the 5000m race Inverclyde were represented by Chris Mackay and Mark Pollard. Craig Ruddy was also due to race though unfortunately had to pull out before the start due to illness. A strong field including National XC Champion Derek Hawkins and Shettleston's Matthew Gillespie made for a fast race and after four laps Mackay, Hawkins and Gillespie had broken from the main pack. The three runners were taking turns to lead but with three laps to go Gillespie made a surge, both Hawkins and Mackay responded to close the gap. On the penultimate lap Gillespie made another break and this time only Mackay could go with him as Hawkins dropped into third. With little between the front two Gillespie led Mackay through the bell before Chris kicked with 200m to go. However for the third time Matthew produced a final surge and came storming past Chris on the home straight to claim victory in 14:10. Afterwards Chris paid credit to Matthew for a fine performance whilst Chris was delighted to record a new PB of 14:13 taking 7 seconds of his previous best. Mark Pollard ground out a solid performance to come home in the main field in 14:42.

Weekend Roundup - Ryan Gray wins National Schools Cross Country Championship
Leading from the front - Ryan Gray National Schools P6 Champion
Inverclyde AC seniors and juniors produced some excellent performances over the weekend at various events across Scotland. In the Stena Drilling Tartan 10K at the Balmoral Estate on Saturday Andrew Douglas finished fifth overall and second Scot in a time of 32.52 behind the winner Martin Williams of English club Tipton Harriers. Andy will now head off to Ethiopia for 10 days to compete in a half marathon as well as training with a local group of athletes.
Also on Saturday in the Glasgow Parkrun 5K at Pollok Park the Club’s Julie Gordon clocked an excellent new PB of 20 minutes exactly to finish second lady and 39th overall. Youngster Joe Crawford also produced an excellent PB over this tough undulating course to clock a time of 23 minutes exactly in the 15 to 19 boy’s age group.
Last but certainly not least young Ryan Gray took an impressive win to take gold for his school in the P6 race at the SSAA Primary School’s Cross Country Championships at Kirkcaldy on Saturday. Ryan comfortably won by 18 seconds in a time of 5 minutes 33 seconds.

McFadden makes marathon debut at London and Douglas makes it 9 Parkrun victories
James McFadden - London 17/4/11
Inverclyde AC had two athletes competing at separate events in the Club’s colours at the weekend. On Saturday Andrew Douglas comfortably won the Edinburgh Park run 5K for the ninth time clocking a winning time of 15 minutes 54 seconds. Andy’s PB for this event is 14.57 which he set last year and hopes to better in summer 2011.
On Sunday in the 30th running of the Virgin London Marathon James McFadden clocked a respectable time of 3 hours 11 minutes 24 seconds in the unseasonably warm weather conditions on his marathon debut. James went through half way in 1:27 however his inexperience over the marathon distance was exposed over the second half of the race . It's often said that half way in the marathon is 20 miles not 13 and as is so often the case for debutants the last 6 miles took their toll on James. Despite his pace dropping significantly as the heat and exhaustion took hold, James managed to dig in and record a respectable finish. He plans plans to return next year stronger, wiser and ready to break the 3 hour barrier.
James would like to thank the club for giving him the opportunity to run at London in 2011 and would like to thank everyone for their support and generosity in sponsoring his chosen charities The British Heart Foundation and The Stroke Association which so far have benefited to the tune of over £1600.Anyone who would like to make a donation can do so @ http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/JamesMcFadden
The next event for most Inverclyde AC juniors and seniors will be at the first DunRen Open Graded Track and Field Meeting of the season at Linwood on Wednesday 27 April starting at 7pm.

Glenpark Harriers - Willie Jukes 5 miler - Dunoon 9/4/11
Three IAC members joined around 100 members and friends of Glenpark Harriers on the Calmac ferry to Dunoon for the Willie Jukes memorial race on Saturday. On a warm and sunny afternoon across the water Glenpark's Steven Trainer won the seniors race holding off a determined challenge from Alan Henderson with Stevie Campbell in third place . Representing IAC were John Smillie, Graeme Forbes and James McFadden and the IAC members had mixed fortunes on the day. Graeme's recurring hamstring problem reappeared after 2 miles and forced him to limp home over the remaining 3 miles. John had a solid run (35:08) on the day and continues to regain his form after a recent calf injury. James ran (31:29) a steady even paced effort over the 5 miles as he now focuses on his final preparations for next week's London Marathon. James is running the Virgin London Marathon on behalf of two charities The British Heart Foundation and The Stroke Association. If you would like to sponsor him you cn do so at:

Bronze Medal for Jonathon! - Schools International Cross Country Championships - Antrim - Ireland - Sat 26/3/11
Congratulations to young Jonathan Glen who having been selected to represent the Scottish Schools at the international Cross Country Championships in Antrim returned home with a team bronze medal!.
Juniors - National Road Race Championships - Rouken Glen Park - Glasgow - 20/3/11
Bronze Medalists - Matthew, Greig & Michael
Inverclyde AC junior section were well represented at the National Road Race championships at Rouken Glen park, Glasgow last weekend. In the under 13 age group Inverclyde featured among the leaders in both the girls and boys races with Emma Mitchell producing her normal gutsy run to finish 7th in a very competitive field. In the boys race Ross Gray ensured a top 10 finish with a strong run from start to finish taking quite a few places in the second half of the race, both will be looking forward to next year when they can compete in the same age group. Completing a successful age group was Mathew McKinnon.
Jonathon Glen lead the under 15 age group and despite a weekend of 2 races and 7 football games Jon found his form which had secured selection for the Scottish Schools team for next weekend in Ireland, when in the second part of his race he moved through the field slowly but surely to finish top finisher in this age group. Josh Houston and Robert Todd ran well as a team and were unlucky to miss out on a team medal by the narrowest of margins. Issac Dunning added another run to his impressive awards this year.
In the girls race Chloe Simpson and Kelly Williams ensured the black and white of Inverclyde was visible at the front end of the pack.
Greig Williams, Michael Houston and Matthew Thomson secured yet another Scottish National award by winning the bronze team medal in the under 17 age group, credit going to the 3 boys for packing so closely with each other to ensure they appeared on the podium at the finish. During the race Greig lead his team mates managing to remain just in front of Michael with Matthew ensuring the team secured a medal with a long run for home playing to his strength by running the fast finish out of his compeitors.

Kevin Kane comfortably won Inverclyde AC’s final Club Winter Championship event the Bob Grant 7.2 mile multi terrain race on a cold and breezy day around the Greenock Cut on Saturday. Former Club Captain Cameron Spence used the famous Bob Grant vest to start the runners off. After being briefly dazzled by the kaleidoscope of colours on the vest the field set off. Kevin quickly went to the front and for the second club race in a row at Cornalees never looked back and once again completely dominated the race to run out a comfortable winner of the Bob Grant trophy for the first time clocking a PB time of 40 minutes 39 seconds in the difficult windy conditions.
It was close all the way for the next three places between defending Club Champion Sean Gaffney, Thomas Jamieson and Gerry Gaffney. In the later stages it was defending Club Champion Sean that wanted it more as he broke clear to finish second 24 seconds ahead of Thomas in third, with Gerry a further 11 seconds further back in fourth place. Gerry was also the first veteran finisher. This PB performance by Sean also saw him become the senior Club Champion for the second year in a row. Thomas in third also secured the runner up spot in the Championship with another great performance to run Sean very close. Third in the senior Championship was Jude Boulton who has made great strides this year. Jude with a PB also finished fifth overall in the Bob Grant. James McFadden in heavy training for the London Marathon also ran a PB for the second week in a row to finish sixth. James was also a well deserved winner of the Club Handicap Championship from George Hegarty in second, with Robert Shaw in third.
The Bob Grant handicap winner was Erica Cromar with a blistering PB run finishing over five minutes faster than last year. Erica was also the first lady in 11th overall. Second in the handicap on Saturday was Tom Tracey with another great run just ahead of George Hegarty in third for the third race in a row. George also managed a PB to dip under 50 minutes for the first time.
Robert Shaw took the Club Veterans Championship for the second time just ahead of Robert Gray in second, with two men who have come on a ton this year George Hegarty and John Smillie with another PB tying for third. Carrie Gibson and Tom Tracey must also have run close to their PB’s for this course. Graeme Forbes also produced a solid run on the day.
Thanks to Ian and Hugh Cameron for the timekeeping and George Newman for the results. Thanks also to Jack Lang for presenting the awards and to Damien Mallet and Terry Wilkie for the photos and to all the other club supporters.
Also on Saturday Chris MacKay set an excellent new course record time of 14 minutes 29 seconds when winning Clydesdales Harriers Dunky Wright 5K road race. Chris finished eightseconds ahead of Shettleson pair Mathew Gillespie and Tewolde Mengisteab. Craig Ruddy also had an excellent run to finish fourth clocking a time of 14.42.
At the World Cross Country Championships inSpain on Sunday Kilbarchan’s Derek Hawkins coached by one of Inverclyde’s own Lawrie Spence finished 91st overall and 6th GB finisher in the senior men’s 12K race.
